President Fernandez in Santiago.

Santiago.- Proclaiming that his Government promotes a revolution in Dominican education, president Leonel Fernandez yesterday headed the ceremony to mark the start of the school year, in Santiago’s Bella Vista sector.

He asked Congress, specifically the Chamber of Deputies, to identify the sources of the funds to provide the 4 percent of the Gross Domestic Product, or the 16 percent of the National Budget for the educative system.

Fernandez, speaking in the activity in which he also inaugurated Bella Vista’s middle school, said he regrets that the debate over education centers only on the economic and doesn’t acknowledge its accomplishments.

The chief executive said as in any human activity the funds for education are indispensable, because nothing can be done without them, but reiterated that they shouldn’t take priority over the reflection and debate.

Same BS as always. How about actually improving the education system instead of just promising to do it? We couldn't rank a low as we do compared to the rest of the world if LF had lived up to 10% of his promises.

These are just more empty promises. The government needs to keep the people uneducated so that they will continue to depend on the largesse of those in power.

If Lie-onel Fernandez and the PLD keep it up they will promote a Revolution but it wouldn't be in education!

After all is said and done, all the DR Government has EVER done in the field of Education is REFLECT on how much of the original budget allocation can be funneled into other FAVORED PROJECTS and to DEBATE whether that is enough to spread out amoung all the DELAGATES and SENATORS.
Other than that, the DR is still in the DARK AGES of FEUDALISM and ROBBER BARONS.

Anyone disagree???
about the FEUDALISM or the ROBBER BARONS COMMENT?? If you do, you might read a bit of Mideavel History and compare the SOCIAL and ECONOMIC situation to modern day Dominican Republic and it's impact on the population.

TAXES AND MORE TAXES! That's what LF is asking the Congress for other sources of money! Why don't you get it from the MEtro?

"the DR is still in the DARK AGES of FEUDALISM and ROBBER BARONS."

Bill,

I agree one hundred percent!

Especially when the Dominican government has money to build Catholic Churches and doesn't seem to be able to find resources to build schools!

revolutionize what? education? u kidding me right? I seen no improvement as far as i know. The only thing that Liar-nel revolutionized is the insane level of drugs, poverty, and delincuencia! Oh, and the percentage of funds for education should be greater. Hasn't liar-nel ever heard "the kids are tomorrow's future?" Guess not!

Maybe I missed the obvious, but I didn't read anywhere about how he would actually "revolutionize" the education system. What amount of the past budget was going to education? How was it being used? How will the current money be used? What pedagogical and systemal changes are going to be implemented to warrant the word "revolutionize"? Are they going to start with the only thing that can make changes--by educating the teachers? Is every area of the DR going to receive funds, training, resources, etc. for a "revolution." The gaping hole of information both in this article and from the president is astounding.

One thing is for certain--the DR needs a revolution in education.

And if there were an impartial and egalitarian approach, it would truly change the country.

EDUCATION IS THE ONLY WAY THE DR CAN CHANGE FROM POVERTY, CORRUPTION AND IGNORANCE TO A FUNCTIONING, SAFE, EDUCATED AND PROPEROUS SOCIETY.
