Santo Domingo.- The National District City Council and the Public Health Ministry will work together to regulate street vendors, to guarantee the quality of the food the population consumes.
Mayor Roberto Salcedo and Health minister Bautista Rojas said from now on all food vendors -whether fixed or mobile- must have Public Health’s sanitary permit and meet all requirements, and must undergo lab tests to uncover any disease and guarantee safety, before selling to the public.
They must also posses a good behavior document from the Police and will have to wear a uniform.
Salcedo said an ongoing census has registered around 2,500 vendors in public spaces so far, a figure he said constantly increases.
The officials said the meetings to orient the vendors have already begun, and warned that those who don’t meet the requirements won’t be able to utilize any public space, which will be organized so that several people don’t sell the same product in a one place.

FredC,
I really like the "tostones & carne frita". I am going to miss the "chicharrones" and "morsilla", too.
Hope they don't go overboard with regulations and that it is all done for right reasons. Otherwise they'll just increase beuraucratic process and cost.
I would expect price to increase anyway, as this practice will reduce competition. But all in all, this could be good, and cleanliness and quality could improve. Also, if we make it both cleaner and safer, then maybe tourists would be more inclined to try it and drop some of their hard currency-which would be good for everybody.
Uniforms would make everyone look more professional and eliminate tattered and dirty clothes-hopefully. On the other hand, this could have a negative impact on grass-roots level private entrpreneurialship, and that could be sad.

While some may look at the move by the Public Health Minister as an infringement requiring vendors to seek an operating permit on Public places as costly. I can only speak for myself, but.....On my next visit to the DR and get a wiff of that good ol Dominican Food cooking it will be a welcome sight [sign] to see an valid Health approved Operating Permit posted for all to see.
Although I'm careful what and where I eat I never got sick, only upon my return to the U.S.

mrios,
And just because the government taxes the private entrepreneurs you assume the license represents due diligence and actual compliance with international sanitary standards; or did they pay off an official off and got a license.
I hope you feel better in probably paying more for something that has the potential of making you just as sick as before!

that food does not make you sick. you just have to know what carts are clean. Ask the local people which carts are clean they know. Also, if you are a first time tourist you might get sick, but if you are always in DR then you should be fine.
But a little sanitary permit will not make me feel any better. You can be in any big city in the world and find roaches and rats in the kitchens

Oh well... a few germs here and there are good for building up your immune system. My daughter was working at a pizza place (while in high school) and told me about all the cock roaches that she would see all over the place whenever they would first open for the day. It still had a 98% rating from the Health Dept. I never went back to eat there. I remember one day that I went to the drive-thru at a McDonald's and while sitting in my car waiting for my order, I saw at least 8 to 10 mice right by the back door. Never went back there either. I have found chewing gum in my salad, dead bugs and other strange creatures in my food at other places. I'm talking about here in the USA.
And then, I'm sure you all have seen what some cooks and servers do to your food if you complain or they are not happy with you.

I think it would be a better idea to require lawmakers to actually show up for some of the legislative sessions. Or requiring all "public servants" to disclose to source of their fortunes. Or subjecting any and all personnel issuing a fake document to stiff penalties.
But let's start with the most important issue first. The quality of street food.

Don't the officials think the public has good enough sense to judge for them self? I have eaten at the fritarias on the streets for over 40 years and never have I gotten sick from it. Most people can judge weather something is good or not and after something is fried at over 350 degrees, what pathogenes could survive that? Baloony on that kind of regulations that give the officials an oportunity to suck pesos off the poor little guys trying to make a days living. To the tourist, it is an adventure, some will go for the food and others want McDonalds hamburgers no matter where they travel. If they want to control something let them go to the big established resturants and check their cleanliness out!!!!
