Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Government has several loans pending totaling US$150 million from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the World Bank and other entities, to trim the losses of the electricity distribution companies.

Among the projects which may use to the funds it is the installation of remote meters to gauge energy consumption and thwart frauds, said the IDB’s local representative Manuel Labrado yesterday.

The official’s statement contradicts the electrical sector’s version that there are currently no funds to install new meters, one of the mechanisms which contribute to prevent the non-payment by energy consumers.

The Government had planned to spend US$120 million since December 2008 to place metes and new technology to reduce losses and boost collections for electricity use, at least according to what president Leonel Fernandez had stated at the end of last year.

As long as Nepotism and corruption reign solid then the meters are just another source of corruption funds for the powers to be within the CDE.

"The official’s statement contradicts the electrical sector’s version that there are currently no funds to install new meters"

This is a true statement, the cockroaches have already stolen and spent it on their relatives.

An electric meter reads what is used.....if the lights are off all the time, nothing is being used.....let's try generating enough product to be metered FIRST.......typical Dominican mindset, "How do we collect?"

You have to do something to collect, you have to WORK to collect....

To combat the electrical theft problem there has to be a will to fight it. Since the only will shown by government officials so far is the will to fill their pockets what will change. I hope Marranzini possesses the will necessary to follow through with his announced plans.

OK! ..so I finally had a meter installed after requesting one for months after the purchase of our home. Well one day they showed up (pissed off as heck of course for not having one) and they installed the meter. Woo Hoo! I am going to pay for what I use. Well, this was 6 months ago and not one person has come to read the thing. Not one time. Once each month I show up at the local CDE office in my area and “yes…you are in the system, but we have no bill for you”…she say’s with a big smile. In the old days in the states we used to read out own meters and mail in a little card. Something has to work eventually. They will probably cut me off for non-payment soon. HA!

True story !!!!!! from the capital Santo Domingo

Last week CDEE dropped by to check my electricity meter if the seals where still there and it was not tricked.
Why should I trick my electricity meter for only 8 hours of service a day.
Its a scandal that CDEE is spending manpower for checking on non supplied services.

Where I can backcharge CDEE with daily 16 hours of running my generator.

I think its time to install solar panels and abandon the distributor.
