NEW YORK.- President Leonel Fernandez said Thursday the Government will sign an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in less than three weeks, to finance budgetary problems resulting from the global crisis’ impact on tax revenue.

The chief executive affirmed that the signature of a letter of intent with international organism doesn’t have the implication of the past, when the funds were used to finance problems of balance of payments. “They aren’t agreements of structural adjustment to solve problems of balance of payment."

The Head of State, interviewed by journalists of international agencies, said although the Government still doesn’t have the pact’s details, his economic team will study to make the correct decision, for his country’s economy can be invigorated between this year end  and the next.

Fernandez affirmed that resulting from the global financial crisis, exports and imports slumped, as well as local trade, leading to a deficit in tax revenues. He clarified that it’s not a fiscal deficit, rather a lull due to a fall in collections, for which the Government’s planned external financing covers the breach. “In principle we’re with the International Monetary Fund, which allows us greater credibility in international financial markets and would allow the Dominican Republic to issue bonds at an interest rate suited to the country’s intentions."

He cautioned however that his economic team will carefully evaluate if it’s convenient to issue bonds, since the terms of the agreement have yet to be disclosed.

Fernandez will return to his country on Sunday, after taking part in the UN’s 64th General Assembly.

Most people here will be also glad to read that the G20 will take over as the major from the G8 as the major world economic forum and the countries in that group which includes Brazil , Argentina and Mexico as well as China and India will have a greater influence on the IMF.
There have been numerous statements from the government that it is a fall in the income , mainly from taxes and especially as compared to the budget that is the problem and although the Segura problem was horrible and appears to have been fixed, the windfall gains in the sugar industry with higher prices and in the hotel industry , with diversions from Mexico , do not seem to have added to the revenue stream.

It will be good to have China as a source of money and input. They take NO crap when it comes to corruption.

The electrical issues will not be fixed for at least five (5) years. As per the new person in charge. Who says it is more like $1 billion (B) USD That is owed the generators and another $600 million just to fix it.

Segura has to go to jail.

The headline reads:

NEW YORK.- President Leonel Fernandez said Thursday the Government will sign an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in less than three weeks, to finance budgetary problems resulting from the global crisis’ impact on tax revenue.

The headline should read:

NEW YORK.- President Leonel Fernandez said Thursday the Government will sign an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in less than three weeks, to finance budgetary problems resulting from wasteful gov't spending, thievery by elected officials, out of control nepotism, and a complete lack of supervision and controls.

Start reclaiming some of the stolen money that has been proven is being stolen by guys like Segura and his family. Seize all the families money and assets and pay down some of our bills.

The poor level of education provided in this country is seen by how stupid our leaders are.

Of course the $750,000,000 I blew on the under used and over subsidized ($25,000,000 per year) METRO had nothing to do with our "crisis"; Not to mention how my party and my ministers have cleaned out the national treasury!
