Santo Domingo.- The streets of Santo Domingo and other major cities have become vehicle jungles, were reckless driving and suffocating jams undermine the patience and joy Dominicans are known for.
The gases which vehicles spew pollute the atmosphere and make the air hard to breathe, while respiratory diseases are on the rise.
It also increases fuel consumption, personal and family costs, and the quality of life progressively declines, but the vehicles increasingly crowd the narrow streets and avenues, raising the probabilities of dying in a traffic accident.
The Web site www.rd77.com lists those reasons to make the Government aware that it must provide alternatives to travel within a city, and suggests routes for pedestrians and bicycles.
But the same difficulties convert driving into a reckless task. It’s for that reason that the government must include the Pedestrian and Bicycle Corridor in their projects," it said. "Underneath the overpasses is an ideal space for pedestrians and bicycle corridors. We put it in the hands of any government to make this concern a reality.”
It adds that many richer and more developed countries than ours use the bicycle as means of transport to respect the environment. “It’s high time for our city to stop being an inhospitable jungle.”

Motorists think nothing of using the shoulders of the roads as "extra, or passing" lanes. Who, in their right mind believes that these same reckless fools will show any respect for a bike lane?

Excellent, excellent idea... but don't forget that it's horrably HOT in the DR, so don't expect people to commute to work on foot or bike. But I LOVE the idea.
In c. guatemala, on Sundays, the city shuts down one of the major streets, and makes it a pedestrian walkway. It's an AMAZING success. Families come out, and use the space, small businesses sell their artisan crafts, people play soccer, baseball, and frisbee... in all, this move makes C. de Guatemala livable on sudays.
I know we shut down the Mirador del Sur to traffic, but if we did that on la 27, it may promote more people to actually use that bloody median!!!

I cannot believe the first sentence ...Dominicans have next to no patience as can be demonstrated at traffic lights and when behind another car who may just be going at the legal speed ..
It is a good idea but in practice would not work here ,,vendors would block the footpaths, bike riders would not respect pedestrians and pedestrians would get mugged when walking alone
As for Zona Colonial , yes, parking permits for residents and payment for others but not meters as they are way too ugly

Yes, I like the path however, respect for the path users needs to be greatly enforced with stiff penalties!

What has been Santiago's experience with parking meters? I recall seeing lots of meters at El centro de la ciudad two years ago.

Well, to do anything well, we need to build in the capacity... we have the AMETs who can ensure that these lanes are respected. Beleive me, in NY & DC, people were EXTREMELY eskeptical whether these pathes would work, and alas, THEY ARE! and more importantly, PEOPLE ARE USING THEM.
I commute on my bike to work every day, and LOVE IT. If only I could do the same in the DR!

I know this is much off subject but do any one know the name of the mall being built downtown Santo Domingo? I was just there four months ago and saw the new construction. Any information or availability would be a great help…Thanks Yusuf
From: Dominican Republic, vieja Santo Domingo
Yusef just give us an idea in what area you are calling downtown as there are so many new buildings going up that it is impossible to tell you .I have not seen any new buildings around Duarte/ 27 de febrero and none near Plaza Lama /Central however maybe you mean in Herrara where there have been several malls opened or maybe you mean the Ferreteria Americana site which is growing very large in Kennedy give us a clue

I read how people are claiming that this measure may be impossible due to the reckless drivers but if huge mega cities like Mexico City and Sao Paulo can do it, then why not little Santo Domingo? Many claimed such measure wouldn't work in Mexico city, a city which is known for it's insane traffic and crowded streets where vendors are literally everywhere! Now, however Mexico City has managed to become even more pedestrian friendly and walkable than Santo Domingo. The weather in Santo Domingo may be a problem but it wouldn't be the first city with such weather to build bike lanes (Phoenix, I'm looking at you). I'm all for it.

I think it is a good idea but, I don't think the government will invest in bicycle lanes. It will cost too much for the government. I another thing is that motorist will not respect those lanes.
