Pueblo Viejo mine.

Santo Domingo.- Herrera Industries Association president Manuel Cabrera on Tuesday said the contract between the Dominican State and the company Barrick Gold to exploit the Pueblo Viejo mine near Cotuí is very important for the country, whereas Hotels and Restaurants Association (Asonahores) president Arturo Villanueva it should be transparent, since the authorities have to be very strict in those cases.

The Herrera business leader said the recent controversy around the referred contract results from ¨individualistic positions.¨ He affirmed that the pact is important for the country, mainly for the zone of the gold mine, because it will contribute to spur its economy.

As to the official position, Mining director Octavio Lopez stressed that the Pueblo Viejo Dominicana project is important and provided the details of its reach and content, while rejecting that it harms the environment and natural resources.

He said the critics don’t know of its enormous benefits, such as the environmental and technical aspect and from the economic standpoint.

Villanueva notes that there has been transparency in the contract, adding that he´s basing his view from contracts with hotel sector companies, since the Dominican authorities are very strict to approve them.

Barrick will only add to the disaster in Pueblo Viejo.
The river runs a pH of 1-1.7 and kills any animal or fauna that comes in contact with it.
Barrick however is not to blame for the present circumstances. The Dominican Government who had control of the so called mining effort under General Imbert Barrera created this night mare.

Blutarsky,

If you don't know what Barrick stands for then here is a link for you to understand and see.
Once they have raped the country with your politicians you will have the same hell hole that the DR government left you with in the first place in Pueblo Viejo.
Gold mining especially strip is the worst ecological man made disaster that can happen.

Bruce shame shame you should be supporting your fellow ice farmers instead of condemning them for being bad corporate citizens and for planing to rape the environment .....I think the cleanup deal they made for the old destruction at the previous mine far out ways any ....pillaging of the environment at the new one .....like two steps forward and three back or paying the cannibals to eat you last ....anyway enjoy shoveling your driveway

I have to agree with Blutarsky.

You know how about putting your money where your mouth is Bruce? How about you offer to pay the salary that 10 of those workers are going to make at that mine for the next 5 years or so?

Hey I know how about you convince a group of people to go down to the area and fund a project that will offer the people of Cotui the same earning potential that the mine is going to offer.

It is very easy to talk about the enviroment and ask others to sacrifice food, shelter and health while you sit comfortably in your home.

Barricks plan and technology for that mine is infinite times better for the environment and the people of the area, than what had been going on there for years.
