Caracas official says operation “isn’t advisable”
SANTO DOMINGO.- The Venezuelan Government has discarded the negotiations to buy a 49% stake in Dominican Republic´s only refinery, REFIDOMSA), affirming that the operation “is not advisable” for the South American nation, said Caracas Energy minister Rafael Ramirez, quoted by EFE and AFP, and news source universal.com.
“We are not going to participate in the acquisition of the refinery in Santo Domingo. There is no participation. It doesn’t seem advisable to us and we aren’t going to do it," the Venezuela official said.
Dominican Government officials weren’t available for comment, according to news source diariolibre.com
The sale of a 49% stake in the refinery for US$130 million was confirmed in mid 2009, although the signature to close the deal had been postponed several times.
The Government had bought out Royals Dutch Shell´s 50% stake three years ago, after it accused the multinational of irregularities¨ in Refidomsa´s management.

Venezuela swimming in debt; Chavez pissed at Lionel.
Venezuela media reportied that today Chavez blamed the USA for testing an "earthquake bomb" off the coast of Haiti last week. The report claimed Chavez said that the weapon test was for future use in Iran and Venezuela.
Who is crazier...Chavez or Ahmadinejad?

I agree with Josean on this one. Payback time. Next test will be Petrocaribe. Forget planting all those black beans or find some other market for them.

Last week HugoNut devalued his currency.
So basically, with a stroke of a pen he just doubled the purchase price.

Good news for DR, that sale would have made us totally dependent on the whims of a discredited, and unstable politician on its way out.
The stake in the refinery is wort a lot more, than the fire sale price.
Maybe now some of our arab friends will jump in and grab the opportunity.
People should be jumping up and down in the DR with joy, and the Chavez fans are reminded once more, that you can't rely on the word of a loud mouth.

This is excellent news. In other news the great spiritual leader of the nutty left, Hugo Chávez, has blamed the U.S. for the earthquake in Haiti. He said the U.S. was testing an earthquake weapon. Also, the venezuelan government puppet online newspaper, vheadline.com, says that Venezuela was the first country to send and get humanitarian aid to Haiti after the quake. I wonder what else these clowns will come up with.

anthonyC..you are probably correct but as the payment not going to be in cash it was not going to be a strain on their overseas currency reserves. Are there other countries with government held refineries apart or does the DR stand alone and do we have the expertise here to do it alone or do we need a petroleum company as a partner??

Chavez has not been playing with a full deck. His house of cards is about to fall down. His administration has not managed his country's economy properly, sadly to the point no foreign investors are willing to risk their capital there for fear of nationalization. No money in, no money out.
Chavez cannot buy interest in a refinery when his funds have dried up.

zooma .. I think that is spot on ,,there was quite a lot of money leaving Venezuela before devaluation , no doubt in anticipation of the eventual devaluation and he has no expertise left in the banking system. So our good luck not to have him as a partner . Having said that he was very charitable here with homes for those affected in floods and his contribution to Haiti was very commendable.

and you know, it was brother Juan Pablo Duarte who said: "Nuestro Pais sera libre de toda potencia extranjera o se undira la isla." All Latin American countries should have great relations with one another due to the shared interests, cultures, and geo-political situations. However, one less foreign country owning a piece of the land is good with me. So what if the deal did not go thru?

Let’s see how your Genius LIE-onel Fernandez handles these looming emergencies:
