Santo Domingo.- Local and foreign investors began the construction of  Dominican Republic´s first green building, at an initial cost of US$50 million, which will create 2,000 direct and 15,000 indirect jobs.

The new mall is in a 120,000 square meter lot on the corner of the Kennedy Lincoln avenues, and will feature 180 stores and parking for 1,400 vehicles, said Ágora Mall Marketing director Silvia Rosales yesterday.

She said the facility will offer the most varied products and services in the country, where shoppers can find everything in one place.

The mall will also feature 10 elevators, four of which are panoramic, 16 escalators, four basement parking levels, as well as plants for energy and sewage treatment, central air in common areas, 24 hour security with specialized personnel and closed circuit cameras.

She said Ágora Mall is green because the project´s design and construction process "will be certified under the standards of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), a program developed by the United States Green Building Council.

It will also save 40% in water consumption and lighting, which will feature the use of the leading edge Light Emitting Diode (LED) system.

I wish more buildings had green roof tops like in Chicago & NYC
Fill the entire roof with plants and proper drains to reduce heat

Most buildings in DR are all ready "GREEN" as they save a 100% on the consumption of lighting and water since they rarely have either!

Especially the schools!

Ateo ..you see when ever there is a good idea like the green mall on the corner of Lincoln and Kennedy , it gives all these people who hate to see progress another opportunity to show how much they prefer to oppose any good idea , you see, xwill7 has seen these projects work in the USA and can appreciate their value but those who have little vision or experience or a desire to make the DR a better place will give you the normal negative comment

I have seen a roof top where this guy has a bunch of clear tubing. His water runs the water into the tubes that are hot from the sun... Then that warm water runs into his boiler. Less energy is used since the sun warms the cold water a bit

Wow that is great news for SDQ. I hope they make the buildings with all the latest earthquake specs.
I was wondering what that was, right in front of the GM franchise.
So many malls coming up, another one is Blue Mall next door in Ave. W. Churchill, soon to open, and IKEA right in front on Kennedy Ave.
DR is just booming all over and more and more investors are noticing, and hoping on the rush for gold.

This is indeed great news, I hope that this is first of many to come. Also, the DR should study the Cuban's model of organic energy. The cubans are now almost freed of oil and have develop a tremendous network of rural and urban organic farming.

Here in NYC, buildings are getting funding to develop organic rooftops that serve as greens for the city and produce warm water via the usage of solar panels.

This is greeeaaaaaaaate news that DR is becoming environmentally conscious! Hopefully they will get over 50 % from solar energy and use locally made building products, and most important THAT THEY USE DOMINICAN PEOPLE TO BUILD IT AND WORK AFTER COMPLETION.

Their venture; their risk. If successful, then let then reap profit windfall.

Josean,

I have to say that I often agree with you, but there is one aspect of this project that it is good for the future of the country as a whole. The introduction of green technology, does not only educate people about what the technology is and its capabilities, but also, motivates future investments for green projects.

I know that the country's education system is not up to speed to green technology or green jobs, since not even the great superpowers are up to speed. I do believe that this particular green building is many years ahead of Dominican's technology know how and manipulation skills. But it will save our planet and make the country cleaner.

As a caribbean nation, which has plenty of sun light and wind, we ought to have more buildings like this one. There is plenty of space to set up solar fields and wind mills plantations, which can provide vast amount of energy.

Great Blutarsky,

Right on!

Where is Mucho Loco? He's been conspicusly absent. This is his kind of story, where he typically regales us with dearth of comical and useless ideas. Frankly, after all this sadness, I could use a good laugh......I need a break-we all do, I am sure.

Could he somehow be taking advantage of situation and trying to sneak into USA? Or is he somehow so disappointed with his beloved Cuba, on the recent death from hypothermia of more than 20 psychiatric hospital patients, that he jumped off the Duarte Bridge?

Mucho Loco, where are you?

D,

Green technology is a good thing but it is complete irrelevant and insignificant to be practiced by third world countries when their carbon foot print is insignificant compared to the first world industrialized counties.

The United States the European Union, Japan, China and India need to practice Greening the Planet way before they demand this from the third world, whose contribution to global pollution is minor at best.

I support that we build sensible, environmentally friend buildings with the least negative impact. What I object to is the government presenting this in a manner that gives the impression that a private enterprise project no matter how noble a as subterfuge to hide the massive inefficiency in their ability to meet the most basic needs in the daily lives of average Dominicans.

People who read this think that this translates to a significant material improvement in the quality of life in the Dominican Masses and that is just no the case.

We human beings have such arrogance, that we think that we are “saving the planet” by stopping our insane pollution. The planet was just fine before we arrived and it will be fine once we become extinct either by our own making or a natural event.

It sounds altruistic to say we are saving the planet but what we need to do is save ourselves, the planet will do just fine without the largest species of parasites that have ever walked on the face of the earth.

Finally, I would argue that building schools and offering our populace world class educational opportunities will do infinitely more as social contribution to “greening the planet” by producing an educated, environmentally conscious citizenry, than creating a “green mall” to sell junk from produced by the environmental criminals in China!

But I still love you my brother!

D,

I like it too, don't get me wrong. I think there are many practical and cost effective ways that countries with limited financial resources can be very effective.

In fact I think Dr. Strangelove could educate most of us, certainly me, on very practical technological developments that are come on line almost daily.

I would humbly implore him, if it is not too much to ask, that from time to time to post a brief note on these emerging technologies. Or any other DT poster who has such expertise and would be so inclined.

Josean,

Unfortunately, given competitive nature of "Green Business" and intellectual property protection, there are several initiatives that I am not at liberty to comment on. We have many US Patent applications in pipeline and, until issued, I cannot comment on technology, for it would invalidate claims. Anything I say in DT becomes public knowledge, which could serve to preclude granting of intellectual property rights. I will, however, comment as appropriate and as am able to.

Thank you.

Dr. Strangelove,

I truly understand and appreciate the position that your are in given your legal and contractual obligations. So whatever contribution you make to tutor the unenlightened mob, of which I am the most prominent member, would be highly appreciated.

I am sure that you, better than anyone, knows all the misinformation and get rich quick "green shysters" that are reproducing by the second like a plague on this topic.

So any links to articles or other reputable info would be greatly appreciated if and when you can!
