Santo Domingo. – Via auctions organized by the Dominican Republic Agribusiness Bourse (BARD), the Environment Ministry (SEMARENA) will sell all wood, charcoal and other forest products seized for illegal traffic, cooperation agreement announced yesterday the.
Environment minister Jaime David Fernandez Mirabal and BARD president Omar Benítez said the proceeds from the auctions will go to the reforestation program “Planting towards a green border” as part of the Plan Green Quisqueya (Verde).
Fernandez said the value of the wood seized in 2009 may top RD$60 million. “Semarena aims to make the auction of wood and other products seized from the lawbreakers more transparent and also seeks to put an end to the practice of giving a political use to those resources.”
He added that his department’s program aims to increase the forest cover along the border, considered the most vulnerable zone because of its poverty, ground degradation and depredation of forests.

I hope this is really all true and that the money will be directed as indicated.
For the daily dose of bad news we get from our beloved Quisqueya, this one stands out as responsible and well-focused initiative and good news.
Good work, now please deliver the goods.

When the Dominican government will get serious about it, that burden will fixed for good. But keep ignoring the problem and/or pretending to try to solve it won't lead two countries nowhere.
Haiti is a handicaped state, and it is obvious that, with its limited economic capability, it won't be able to do anything significant about managing its border.
Therefore, it is you the Dominicans to stop crying and to take matter into your own hands and stop the bleeding.
Oupala,
With drug business growing by leaps and bounds, they need more drop zones and makeshift landing strips, so don't expect those clearings to stop any time soon.
In DR, everything is for sale and drug lords offer attractive price, judging by their extensive success.

I am not a Dominican, therefore I should feel glad about the situation in your country, but as an islander fitted with kinship and solidarity, I can't see your government dropping its arms that way in front of those tremendous problems you people are facing.
I sincerily think that you need another Duarte, because the politicians and your actual elite are selling you and your country to the highest bidder.
Why is it that the Dominican Republic, which is boasting about having the second armed forces in the Carribean, and is recognized as an economic dragon, is not being able to manage 350 kms of border line? Why is it unable to get rid of corruption which is syphoning a big chunk of the country GDP? Why can't it catch and machin gun the cocaine traffickers like they do it in Asia?
I don't understand why with a 60 billions dollars economy, you can't manage to implement such wise tactics and policies, instead of buying pieces of junk that won't be of any usefulness against those smart and bold morons who want to use the border as their bread winner.
please stop clowning around
this is not le cirque du soleil
please stop clowning around"
In what way do you consider my words being of those of a clown? I think yours arere coming from a kid who is happy for his Chrismas gift.
