Santo Domingo.- The hydroelectric power company Egehid yesterday inaugurated the Las Barias generation plant on the Nizao river, which can permanently generate 850 kilowatts daily, equal to the consumption of 450 homes and 6 million kilowatts annually, said Hydroelectric mini-power project director Teófilo Pacheco.

Egehid administrator Rafael Suero said the plant’s entry will increase the region’s generation from the current 4,160 volts, to 12,500 volts “and bolster the quality of energy at the zonal level."

The plant cost US$9.4 million to build, an investment expected to be recovered within 10 years.

Suero said the reconstruction and elevation of the retaining wall to channel the waters would also prevent flooding in the communities Semana Santa and Boca de Mana.

He also announced for 2012 the construction of hydroelectric dams on the Artibonito and Manabao rivers, but didn’t specify if the latter is the resumption of the Manabao-Bejucal-Tavera project, squashed by Jarabacoa residents when it was learned that the Yaque North river would be diverted away from that tourist city.

This is the type of energy that we need here in this country and also Solar energy to save money on diesel fuel that we buy to operate the other power plants generators that runs on diesel oil.

I guess the problems with the Education system go waaaay back - Pacheco, get your trasero back to grade 5, seems like you skipped the math classes...

FYI: 850kilowatts/day equals a little over 300,000 kilowatts/year - 300K is quite a ways off from 6mm kilowatts... Fail!!!

There must be a misprint somewhere.. 850 kw should cost slightly over $1.0 MM not $9.3 MM USD.

Juango,

1 mil USD is to much, I went on youtube, lol, and i saw a small mycro hydro electric generator in some ones home and he claims it can power 325 US homes or 700 EU homes, and trust me the dam thing doesn't even look like its worth 200,000.00 USD. I tellya, I want to start supplying Leo with all his needs.

Even if the maths are wrong ,it is still an important investment ..can some one tell me is this the power station where the turbines were damaged by trees flowing down ..after a lengthy and very heavy rainy week a year or two ago ..I am sure it is ,and if so ,this is a project announced months ago .

I think this guy got all his info wrong:
1- You don't generate voltage but power in watts 850 kw is 850,000watts .Not even 1 mw.
2-He claims voltage would be increased to 12,500 from 4,160 ,all you need is a step up transformer and get any voltage you so desire for transmission purposes.
3- To be exact on the generation adquisition 31,025mw/yr That is generating 365 days a yr,
very unlikely unless you have a back up generator when maitanance is up to replace carbon brushes, cleaning, lubricating moving parts,as well as stoning, but knowing them they will run it to the ground. We all know there is nothing maintanance free, solid state diodes included
4-A dam without turbines to propelled the generators is useless Idealy down slope into 36" pipes tandom to the turbines.or parallel feeding which in this case for that money they could have bought a power house with multiple turbines couple to generators. What am geting at is they are not using the hydro-elerctric power in its fullest
