I am a strong critic of Chavez, however these prices have nothing to do with him. In fact if not due to the favorable credit terms that he gives us ( not low interest, just long terms to pay) we might not have any gasoline at all. Our incompetent larcenous government is the reason we pay the highest fuel prices in the Western hemishere. Since the gov't collects a % of the prices charged, the only way they can increase there income is to increase the prices. Not that they are going to use any of these funds in a proper manner, like improving education, paying a living wage to the armed forces and Police, or improving the infrastructure. No, this money will either go to the JCE to waste more money on our never ending electoral campaigns or directly into their pockets.

I agree these prices have nothing to do with Hugo Chavez, nevertheless when you add him to the equation the prices will be even higher you will have the corrupt polititians and the socialist mentality of chavez. not a good combination for any nation time will tell

You are right about that. Chavez is a loose cannon just waiting to go off. Just wait until we are late in paying. You can expect to see Venezuelan troops coming to a street corner near you.

You guys realize that gasoline in the D.R. is relatively Cheap right?

AnthonyC gasoline is slightly cheaper than in Europe, but thats about it. prepare yourselves for the next round of the global crisis hitting these next two years. America is about to have another mortgage meltdown this time relating to the Alt-A and Commercial Real Estate bubbles that did not burst due to the bailouts. Get ready for a financial storm the entire world is going to feel. in the meantime the price of oil is going to rise drastically once again and will most likely be at $100 a barrel by summertime 2010. The U.S dollar is losing its importance and value each and everyday but thats part of the agenda. Oil itself has been hitting peak output for the past 4-5 years and in order for these greedy bastards to make money they are going to manipulate the prices again through exaggerated speculation. So save your money people and get ready, 2009 is going to look like Christmas compared to the next 2 years.

Fuel in general is way to high if you condier the standard of living of the local population. the actual price is irrelevant if not taken into consideration the wages of the people.

Where in any major European Country can you get Gas for $4 a gallon?

The DR has no Oil
All Crude is Imported on small inefficient tankers as the DR isn't big enough to rate a super-tanker
The DR has a Antiquated refinery.
The DR has an inefficient distribution system. Gasoline has to be delivered by road tanker to everywhere from MonteCristi to Samana....The Costs are spread out to to maintain the same price nationwide. So when you gas up in Santo Domingo you are paying to have gasoline delivered to Samana.

So explain to me how Gasoline in the DR is Expensive?

cant wait until everyone is running on natural gas... They can install gas lines to each city and forget about much of the delivery costs

AnthonyC you are implying that the gasoline is expensive because of the logostic properties of transporting it. But the price of gasoline does not only consist of oil cost, to the contrary mine brother the major chunk of gasoline prices consist of taxes.
Do not compare western countries with a country that is still in development and still is figuring out how to tie its shoelaces

AnthonyC I was saying that Europe has more expensive gasoline that DR, but thats about the only other place that I know of. It can't be any cheaper than it is in DR due to the fact that oil is purchased in US dollars and our money is worth much less. So the fact that it is only $4-$5 (in dollars) for premium gas is not bad. However that is much much more than the people of DR can pay other than the "elites".

Of course petrol prices are high because they carry much tax ..and as rich people have cars ,SUV¨s and large four wheel drives ,they are the ones who pay the most tax and not the poorer people ,,the higher the fuel price ,the more tax is paid ..and we are in a better position to redistribute the wealth in the country ...or do you not want to help those less fortunate than yourself ?? and we are still cheaper than most of Europe.

Europe has like $8 a gallon gasoline, it is heavily taxed, DR's prices are not bad compared to it at all. Price is high for the average dominican but that doesnt mean that it should be lower because of that, people who don't understand economics would say so, but that would bankrupt the nation in the process. Remember oil is priced in dollars and we have a very limited supply of dollars in our POOR country. The price is good considering the factors involved.

Xwill,

I hope your words on natural gas prove prophetic. It is indeed a plentiful, cheaper and infinitely cleaner fuel than petrol. I should mention fact that I, an avowed capitalist, shall profit handsomely from shift to this fuel. Well, it is a tough job, but someone has to do it and it might as well be me.
