Santo Domingo.- The tourism sector is concerned with the outbreak of cholera in Haiti, because if not managed adequately, could “take it with” Dominican Republic’s high tourism season, which begins in November.
Hotels and Tourism Association (Asonahores) vice-president Arturo Villanueva said the sector yesterday requested an urgent meeting with president Leonel Fernandez to discuss the situation. “We understand that it is a very delicate subject that it must be handled by the President”
He said the chief executive must call a meeting with the Tourism and Public Health ministers, and Asonahores. “If it isn’t handled consciously, the situation can take the high season with it,” Villanueva told newspaper Caribe by telephone.
To keep the disease from arriving in Dominican territory, “there must have an absolute control of the Dominican-Haiti border,” the Asonahores executive said, and urged Fernandez to “dictate the line” for the corresponding officials to proceed.
Villanueva said beyond the Tourism and Public Health commission, created to deal with health issues which may affect the tourism industry, Fernandez must intervene to protect this side of the island from the disease.
“The situation is going beyond that and requires that the President immediately convene a meeting to determine what actions will follow” he said, adding that it’s a matter of State for the presidential must intervene.

To the Dominican extremists, your hateful speeches toward all Haitians are doing nothing but causing indignation and fueling their anger. I can understand your concerns about those who are allowed to cross the border illegally, but does that make it fair to take your anger on all Haitians? It seems to me that most of the extremists who post their frustration on the DT are at the same level as the Haitians working in the sugar cane fields and the ones who are begging on the streets. You seem to be competing with them because you cannot compete with Haitians who have the same level of education, the same economic status as you.

Stop lying Nehesy most blacks in D.R. are descended from Haitians. Another thing very few African slaves were brought by the Spaniards. Since the island had a large population of indigenous (Indian) people, that unfortunately became slaves. And after the natives began to die or escape into the Cibao mountain region, (that's why today still in the Cibao theirs whites that look mestizo, including people of darker hues, also look like they have indigenous blood in them). The Crown authorized the importation of natives from all over the Caribbean and even as far as South America, to be brought as slaves or to serve as domestic servants for the Spaniards. Many indigenous woman intermarried with the Spaniards which the Crown encouraged. As for African slaves they were introduced in 1519, in any significant amount. All this information is recorded, only 4,000 African slaves were brought, and before that about 20 African slaves were introduced in Hispaniola. CONTINUED...

CONT., By 1530 only several hundred African slaves, were brought to Hispaniola. Most of these Africans were escapees (cimarrones) that died because of diseases, and the harsh living conditions in the jungles of Hispaniola. Read the "Devastaciones de Osorio" and what happened after 1606, slave ownership ceased to exist for those Spanish colonist that remained in the city of Santo Domingo. Stop lying Nehesy, you're too easy to debunk.

Nehesy nobody is claiming Aryan-hood, we are just stating the fact, that most Congo blacks in Dominican Republic are of Haitian descent and that's a fact. African slavery in old Hispaniola or Spanish Santo Domingo never became big. The importation of African slaves by the Spanish was insignificant, so negligible that all records point that out. So you could spend you're whole life repeating the same thing, the records speak for themselves. The population in Spanish Santo Domingo peaked around half of the end of the 18th century. Most of the people that migrated to Spanish Santo Domingo were white families from Spain and the Canary Islands. (Frank Moya Pons)... Blacks were never the majority, they were then a small minority. That's why Haitians always found opposition from Dominicans, when ever invaded. Just look at the founder of the Dominican Republic a white Spanish Creole man, not a black guy. It was whites that were affected the most by the Haitian Occupation. CONTINUED...

CONT... Back then the mixed race people were not the majority either for their were not enough people to mix with, although they were much more than blacks. The mixed Dominican people today are a remnant of the depopulation that occurred because of the negative effects, Haitian invasions had on the country. As for you're last statement who cares what you think, you are not in the shoes of those who fell victim to the barbarous, murdering hate filled invasions perpetrated by black supremacists like Dessalines, Toussaint L'Ouverture who hated the Spanish, likewise Boyer, and all the swarms of black troops that killed many innocent people. In short Nehesy nobody is claiming Europe, that's you're mantra that you and others like yourself love to repeat. Dominicans are not Europeans, Indians or Africans we are Dominicans, and we come in different hues or colors... And as i always say and will forever say, as long as i'm alive Dominican Republic for Dominicans, Haiti for Haitians.

Nehesy you're an idiot trying to Africanize Dominican history, with all the distorted misinformation you're giving. First as clearly stated by We and Factor, the Dominican side of the island already had plenty of indigenous people inhabiting the land. Those same Indians were enslaved, and the need for African labor was negligible, that's why so few African slaves were brought to Hispaniola, by the Spaniards. It was in Haiti that the French when ceded the western part of the island by the Spanish, because of losing land from the French, through war. The Spanish had to surrender less than one quarter of western Hispaniola. It was there that the French brought large numbers of African slaves, i think you should focus there, in Haiti, instead of attempting to totally Africanize Dominican history. You're attempt has been proven to be false, so you can continue to think that you are right, when you are obviously wrong.

Boy mrchivo talking about distorting information indeed. Nehesy let me correct you on something Dominicans are not only mulattoes, a mulatto is a person of white and black parentage. In colonial Santo Domingo you had different groups; they were: Spaniards, or Peninsulares, Spanish creoles (criollos), mestizos, mulattoes, zambos, blacks. When you speak of the War of the Restoration as some clash between Spaniards and mulattoes, you are distorting the facts. The Spaniards considered themselves better than even the Spanish Creole inhabitants lumping them even with the mulattoes etc. Many of the heroes of the War of Restoration were Spanish Creole men also. How do you explain that, Juan Pablo Duarte a Spanish creole man, was 100% for the War of Restoration. Most authors use the word mulatto loosely to define mixed race, it does not mean, that only people of white and black parentage mulatto or bi-racial were fighting against the Spanish soldiers. CONT... The soldiers from Cuba were as mixed as the Dominican people, the only difference was that they had a contingency of soldiers that were Spaniards and Spanish creoles in there ranks. Plus the administrators and soldiers that came directly from Spain that were the majority in Dominican soil, sent by the Queen where Peninsulares. Look at a picture of the main heroes of the War of Restoration, they came from different backgrounds, but most were Spanish creoles. And likewise in the Dominican ranks you had people of different colors or hues in an effort to defeat the Spaniards.

On another note, we are not Haiti, where Dessalines and his black troops committed genocide against all whites in Haiti, after independence. Where mulattoes gradually became a smaller group, because of racial lead civil wars between the black majority and mulattoes. Like the War of Knives, or the partition of Haiti, split in two between Henri Christophe which led the blacks in his "Kingdom" in the north. And Alexander Petion which led the mulattoes and lighter skinned blacks in his "Republic" in the southern peninsula of Haiti. So you can try to racialize us all you want, we never had the problems Haiti faced.

Nehesy most blacks in Dominican Republic are of Haitian origin, and that's a historical fact. The number of African slaves brought to Santo Domingo was insignificant. Country's like Cuba and Puerto Rico received way much more African slaves than Santo Domingo, that's why in Cuba their are more blacks than Dominican Republic. The blacks in Dominican Republic are mostly of Haitian descent, that were colonized during the Haitian Occupation 1822-1844, to darken the country or Africanize it, even bringing American blacks to places like Samana (Otto Schoenrich). All along the 20th century and presently, as we speak thousands of Haitians have been arriving in the country illegaly. Then second in far less numbers are Cocolos that are descendants of people who hail from the Lesser Antilles, British West Indies, that came to work in the sugar cane fields, under the auspice of the U.S., during the occupation between 1916-1924. So SHUT YOU'RE TRAP, and stop making up crap!

For people that want the truth i recommend you read THE TRANSATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE, and if you want the estimates on the number of African slaves that were brought to Santo Domingo. Go to the chapter called Spain in the Slave Trade, Page, 48. Look at the table of estimates for all the Spanish speaking country's, or former colonies. Notice that Cuba has the largest amount of African slaves 837,000. Puerto Rico, African slaves 77,000. Santo Domingo, referring to the future Dominican Republic only 30,000. You can check the other estimates, for the other countrys. You could check other sources and the estimate you get will be the same.
