Santo Domingo.- Samples of the recently discovered petroleum seeping out from a riverbank near the eastern city Higüey have been certified by a specialized lab, which even classified it within the three groups of the highest quality crude which include the oil exploited in Cuba, the Director of Mining revealed Thursday.

Octavio Lopez said the analyses found that the crude’s sulfur content is below the one percent (0.09%) benchmark for the pollutant.

He said the Cuban scientist Rafael Pertreiro classified it within the three oil groups found in any region of the world and the quality of the samples analyzed are comparable with the high quality crude being drilled by Cuba. “But we want to be very specific, very clear, what we’re saying is that the samples we took from a petroleum flow detected in Higuey have been analyzed, in fact have established that is of good quality.”

Lopez, interviewed on Channel 45, added that there are no figures on whether the crude found in the country is enough to warrant spending on drilling.

The first question is good. The first step is positive: the oil is high quality. The second question: Is there enough oil to warrant investing in drilling? Must now be answered. I hope so.

Maybe the latest earth quakes in the last 2 years had something to do with this oil seeping ?

About 1 mile from my house in Southern California we have water springs and a bottomless lake right on the San Andreas fault line and after little shakers it flows and grows.

Xwill,
Soon to be a big Island...just wait till the old San Andreas shakes her stuff [I believe were way over due].

Just think with predicted global warning and rising beach water Al Gore bought a "MILLIONS $$$" mansion on the beach in northern Calif. one would ask why ?

I guess this Global warming stuff really pays out.

Take care.

Probably a few barrels of oil thrown into the river as trash. And now it seeps out and the DR scientists think they have discovered a new crude source. Wanna bet?

Scientists and experts have always said that Haiti and DR have oil potential. This is a positive step. We'll see what the future brings.

jarabacoa says this

theres a lot of petroleum in dr/haiti, thats a fact! now, leonel frenandez, not prd burros, need to invest in this project and go from there

a fact? then, why did you not tell them this before, so they could stop looking for it? i mean, you should know where it is, if it is a FACT that it is there.

Drill it?
I know of a small creek with oil layers floating.
And alas, there is a petrol station near by....
Nothing out of the ordinary here.

Overall, I think the countries without oil are luckier than those that have oil, especially if they are not among the major powers

Except in socialist countries, the price of gas is primarily set by the world market.
