Santo Domingo.- Canada’s Ambassador today defended the feasibility of the contract between the Dominican Government and the mining company Barrick Gold for the exploitation of sulfides in Pueblo Viejo, Cotuí.

Todd Kuiack said in economic and technological terms the contract greatly benefits Dominican Republic.

The diplomat also touted the Canadian Government’s investment policy in several productive areas and activities in the country, stressing the respect for the environment.

“It is my understanding that the contract contemplates the establishment of mechanisms to guarantee the preservation of the environment and natural resources in the province of Sanchez Ramirez. It’s not only important what will be obtained there in economic terms but also environmentally,” he said.

Kuiack said Barrick Gold operates successfully in 28 countries and in each one has been characterized for responsible mining, contributing to raise the standard of living in the communities and takes into account the environmental assets.

The Canadian diplomat’s statements are in response to recent criticism by different sectors, to the contract with Barrick Gold to extract gold near Cotuí.

And now for another view:

Deputy protests Barrick Gold

PRSC Deputy for Sanchez Ramirez province, Rafael Molina Lluberes, says that Congress has not shown an interest in passing his proposed resolution that would authorize the revision of the contract signed between the Dominican government and the Barrick Gold mining company.
Molina, a strong opponent of the contract, challenges the government decision to create a protected park area in order to evict the farmers, as reported in Hoy. He said that it is not true that the mining company would create 3,000 jobs and said that on the contrary, the area is full of Peruvians. “Now the Ministry of Environment has declared the area as a national park to give the mining company an advantage and to evict the true owners of the lands, the farmers.”
On the popular Gobierno de la Manana talk show it was speculated that there is a plan to use a clause in the contract to establish a cement plant in the vicinity of the mining company.

Hoy also reports that deputy Environment minister Eleuterio Martinez has predicted that pollution in the Cotui area would get worse as a result of the exploitation of the mine. He said that Barrick Gold is not willing to invest a cent in solving the environmental problems created by the operation and abandonment of operations of the former gold mining operation in the area, Rosario Mining. He said the pollution affects the Central Mountain Range and the rivers with sources in that area. He confirmed that the Barrick Gold contract relieves the company from tackling the previous environmental problems and creates joint responsibility for the future problems with the Dominican state. The Dominican government has not spent any money in resolving the environmental problems since they began to affect the area.

Back in da day, my grandfather was in charge of the forest and roads in santiago in the Balaguer era, he said that the americans found out that DR has lots of gold viens running through the hills in San jose dela matas. Balaguer kick the americans out because if anyone was going to rape DR of its gold it would have to be him.

I don't think its a good idea to let others look for gold. DR can pay-off all debt if the Government were to create it own minning company, SHIT Lee-FLEA borrowed almost a Billion dollars for ONE train station. Lets borrow for a minning company I'm sure it will pay back more than 10 fold at the rate gold is valued.

Dominican Republic...The land of a thousand Leslie Mouchs.

Sure, let the DR develop the Gold Industry themselves. They will be as efficient as they are in the energy sector.

At least Barrick Gold is earning their profits honestly and providing jobs for 100's. Let the Dominicans run it and it will be looter paradise and it will "Officially" lose money.

Josean ..it is good to get many views but as usual here, normally one has to see what is happening for ones self before you can have confidence in any statement . I have not been near the mines but i have seen the gold mine operations in South Africa and in Australia and they are produce a large amount of visually horrible areas so I imagine it is the same in Pueblo Viejo . But the areas can be progressively restored and even improved with heavy equipment and I am sure this should have been in the contracts . I do not understand the use of Peruvian labour but the company would answer that question ..they are a responsible company and not fly by nights .

"Molina complained that the director of the Department of Mines, Octavio Lopez and Industry & Commerce Minister Jose Ramon Fadul have become public relations officers for the company"

Cotui environmental management plan

The PRSC deputy for Sanchez Ramirez (Cotui) province, Rafael Molina Lluberes, is campaigning for a review of the contract the Dominican government signed with Barrick Gold. Sanchez Ramirez is the province where the Barrick Gold was authorized to exploit the Pueblo Viejo mine gold deposits. Molina complained that the director of the Department of Mines, Octavio Lopez and Industry & Commerce Minister Jose Ramon Fadul have become public relations officers for the company, in detriment to the better interests of the Dominican people.

He criticized the fact that the contract was fast-tracked through the Chamber of Deputies in 2 hours, and that it establishes that the government will only receive revenues after the company recovers its estimated US$3 billion investment over a period of more than 5 years. He blamed the upper echelons of the political parties for rushing the contract through Congress. He also criticized the fact that the contract does not include an environmental management plan despite the area showing high pollution levels due to loosely supervised mining activity over the past 3 decades. He said that the company is opening the gates of the Mejita and Magajita dams to reduce the pressure caused by rains, but this is being done without the waters passing through treatment plants, which is further polluting the streams in the area. He demanded that an environmental management plan should be included in the contract.

But you can continue to assist St. Cisneros in ripping off the peasents of Miches!
