Santo Domingo.- The alarm has sounded: products from China are unfairly competing with Dominican pars in the local market, said Dominican Exporter Association president Ricardo Koenig yesterday.
“It’s not possible that a country which increases its exports and increases its reserves every year maintains its current exchange rate as China does, to assure that their products reach the world at ridiculously low prices,” he said, affirming that local industries face unfair competition abroad and within the country as well.
He said products from countries such as China are invading Dominican Republic and traditional markets Dominican, with products which get many incentives, which must prompt the Dominican Government, together with other developing nations, to file a formal complaint before the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Koenig said the low prices on Chinese products destroy the national productive sector. He said while Asian countries are competitive because they have many subsidies, Dominican Republic doesn’t have any.
Price and quality
In that regard Furniture Industry Association (Asonainco) president Juan Jose Attias said many Dominican products have prices equal to those of foreign products and that there are many lines in which the quality of local products is much better. He said the country can compete in product quality, price and design.

Chinese Man Eaten by Dog
The menu fought back this time..
SHANGHAI - China - The tables were turned yesterday when a dog which was about to be cooked, ate Fou Fuk Dong, a 24-year-old chef during a Chinese food festival.
The man was participating in the food festival in the Yangpu district of Shanghai when the dog jumped on him and mauled him to death before dragging him into an alleyway.
"He loved dog stew and he especially loved French poodles, they're such a delicacy. He was demonstrating how to prepare the dishes when one of the ingredients for the dish started growling at him and jumped on him. No one could do anything it all happened so quickly. I guess it was Chop Suey time," Jintau Jin Han, the man's brother, told the Xinhuanet news service.
After the dog ate the man, it was captured and cooked, then later consumed by his relatives .....what goes around comes around

anthonyc, i have no idea what is happening these days. i am actually beginning to see some postings from you which make a lot of sense. i have no idea who this moron is, and cannot make sense of his rant. i would like tro know which products he is referring to. it is not as though we are making things which come from china cheaper. a list, please, monsieur. all along, when the oligarchs kept production within family lines, and gave jobs only to friends, they were getting rich selling crap. now that we are signatories to WTO, and other trading agreements, the uncompetitive garbage has come back to haunt them. besides, china has allowed the yuan to float a bit more liberally among the world basket of currencies, so, this accusation is something he read in an article maybe 2 years ago. then again, as Escott would say, it is the ODDERGUY´S FAULT that we cannot compete on the world stage for quality and price.

What is embarrassing about this type of comment is that he is saying that Dominicans are either too stupid, lazy or just feel they are entitled to blame someone else for their situation.
Forget subsidies moron, It is the billion people that are willing to work for a bowl of rice, literally. If the DR had drug laws like China maybe those hordes of politician, armed service and police that suck the public dry, may actually do good.
Then maybe the rest of the DR would feel more positive about working without corruption being their ultimate goal.

Years ago, when these same industrialists were making obscene profits, all they did was stuff the money in their pockets. They never reinvested in modernizing their facilities. Now they are being asked to compete against countries with modern equipment and they can't. Let them invest in modern equipment, let them train our workers (which is another issue, since the workers have no education), and let them take advantage of our proximity to the largest market in the world.
From: United States
juanb, you said a mouthful. they made their obscene profits by either importing everything they could find, or by keeping competitors out of the market environment. now they have to compete, they cannot. so, they bawl bloody murder, like a bunch of spoiled children. the other guy is causing them to fail, as usual. then again, i see it every day. play dominoes with them, and, when they lose, it is the spectators fault for mumbling when they are ¨reading the game ¨.never their fault for misreading it. bunch of kids, that´s what.

If the unions would have jumped on board with say Nafta, most favored nation status and so forth and made sure there was a clause to allow for the unions to go there also it would be a benefit to the union and the workers. Imagine what would happen if the UAW was free to go canvassing in Mexico when the US factories out sourced. What would happen if the Chinese in order to maintain most favored trading status had to put up with the US unions walking around taking pictures of slave factories and sweat shops.
Then OSHA requirements that are a result of the unions demanding safe work place would no longer be a hindrance to US production because the Chinese would have to compete with them also.

What the Chinese are doing is called dumping, that is providing gov't subsidised products and services at rediculously low prices to deny competitors an equal place in the market. The rational being if you drive out the competion you will be the only vendor and able to set higher prices for the product for your gain.
The problem with the Dominican market is that there are too many products of inferior quality, no matter where the origin. One can use an example of ferreterias, that some of the products they sell are imported. The behavior of market dictates how the ferreterias buy from their suppliers. If the consumer is not willing or able to pay high prices for quality products then they get what they are able to pay for and most often they are products of poor quality and workmanship, seconds. The fault of the ferreterias is they do not provide products of higher quality because of a lack of: a market, business sense, and/or shelf space. The consumer is the victim.

Our government must NOT import products from China or highly increase tariffs on their merchandise, and MUST ensure if we import minute produce from them, the Chinese must COMPLY with international health codes in regard to chemicals in their products. Escott, that is the gospel. besides, no amount of corrective measures outside the country will help the competitiveness here, until this house is cleaned first. one big problem is laziness. by that , i do not mean that Dominicans do not want to work. it is that they do not want to THINK. one guy does something, thousands of drones copy to the letter, making no improvements of their own. that will not get it done. just watch what happened on the road from Puerto Plata to Sosua, at Montellano, and you will get the idea. one guy opens a Rancho Tipico, then some genius opens another nextdoor. so, both go into a tailspin. only geniuses could do something like that.

Now feel what we have been feeling for the last 30 years here in America!! Personally, I think all countries should boycott China until they play fair. They are the main reason that United States is destroyed right now economically after laying in bed with the chino's! Go to China and see how they treat the workers in these factories. They make them sleep in the factory after 15-18 hr shifts and if they get caught talking to another factory worker then they get no pay for that month but still have to work for free of course! Talking about sweatshops and human abuses!!! What funny is how things work? United States will do no business with Cuba but will do business with another communist regime China who has human rights abuses and executions weekly also. Funny how money talks and BS walks!

Cj,
Trying to stop doing business with China is like trying to stop young men and women, or some of us older men for that matter, to abstain from sexual intercourse because of fear of AIDS. Quite simply- it won't happen.
As a capitalist conservative, I remain puzzled by our [US] business practice. It all seems very hypocritical to me. Yes, we forsake Cuba but are glad to do business with China, Russia and Viet Nam. I despise communism, but I am inaliably linked to the Cuban nation and I hate to see my brethren continue to suffer unnecessarily.
It is fundamentally outside the tenets of democracy to preclude dissent. Fact is that having regimes such as Cuba strengthens democracy and free market enterprise, rather than weaken it. It gives us a point of reference to which we do not want to gravitate to. We could have a greater impact on Cuba's future, same as we had with China and Russia, by engaging them in business & cultural exchanges.

Everyone knows that China had pegged its currency to the US dollar in order to keep its value low. Weak currency will increase inflation but, will also increase export and lower unemployment rate. China and USA got trapped in the game and both need each other. USA needs China to purchase its debts while China needs to purchase USA debt in order to guaranteed foreign investments. There are other reasons why the Chinese market had grown so big and fast:
Mass unemployment force
Weak currency
No environmental laws is enforced.
Slavery market
Illegal incentives to its industries
Corruption in the government.
