Santo Domingo.- Public Works minister Victor Diaz Rúa on Monday announced a nationwide paving program is 32 provinces and their municipalities, and that the government plans to asphalt all major thoroughfares this year.
He denied that the asphalting is linked to the campaign leading to the May 16 elections and instead to an ongoing government initiative to fix deteriorated streets. “During my tenure I’ve never received any complaint for problems of asphalt.”
The Public Works Minister, interviewed by Luisín Mejía and Christian Jiménez on Color Vision channel 9, said the most work has been in the streets and avenues of the Santo Domingo East municipality, where more than 20 barrios have been asphalted. “It’s not that we prefer Santo Domingo East in the paving program in relation to Santo Domingo North, it’s that (those municipal authorities) don’t submit a proposal to help in this.”

Hey you commie losers, explain this:
Puerto Príncipe.- Grandes buques de guerra estadounidenses zarpan de las costas de Haití mientras miles de soldados se preparan para dejar atrás lo que ha sido la mayor movilización de tropas norteamericanas desde las operaciones en Irak y Afganistán.
Estados Unidos ha emprendido la reducción de su contingente militar que desplegó en Haití para la asistencia a miles de víctimas del devastador terremoto que azotó el país caribeño el 12 de enero.
I guess the occupation is over, huh?

Amazing coincidence, huh?
Elections are coming and streets left unpaved for years are suddenly the center of attention.

Had this bum ever gone to work, he would have been aware of the embarassing condition of the streets, but since he was busy traveling around the world with LF or goofing off he was more ignorant than usual.

this plan was in existence even before 2009 so this has nothing to do with elections, maybe something but overall it s not politicized. que viva el PLD!!!

Yes please fix the roads!! Better and more roads are better for commerce, that way products can be transported to a more vast part of the country. And also better for my 85 Cressida!! That dam thing is low and old. There are places i don't even bother going for fear of destroying the car. LOL

How about a major fix up of the school system and 15 years later we could have a well educated society that earns higher salaries and generate more services which eventually will lead to more more for the state in the form of tax and less crime then we can be able to rebuild all roads brand new with money that we own instead of another loan to repair the roads that only last 2 years. But I guess that would be common sense in action something our beloved poli-thief see as not a feasible idea.

I don't know, but I remain very skeptical of the timing for this inititative. Here in DT, people have been very vocal over the years about the dire conditions of roads everywhere in DR. Almost daily you here from our contributors from Sojoma, San Juan de la Maguana, Santiago, Costanza, Puerto Plata, Sosua, Cabarete, Samana, Las Terrenas, etc, etc.
It all seems to me like vote buying; besides, why emphasis on barrios? I don't think latter are major source of business, particularly in transportation. This is vote buying to me-plain and simply. Barrios people would take this in "line, hook and sinker" and reward PLD once more next election. You see, we really get the government we deserve. Yes, we do.

glo,
I think that you are correct.. This is vote buying. These clowns only think about their own progress. The barrios could stay the way they are.. Its not like the property values are going to go up. I see many nice buildings in DR but the street is full of pot holes. What is the point of having something nice when the street is garbage?

All over the world ,public works occur near an election ,,that is why they are good to have every 3 years and not every 5 years ..Why complain when things are being done ..far more intelligent when they are not !!

ric,
in dr there are many nice projects but after a few years no one continues to do the maint. work on it... The barrios should not be proprity, they should focus on the places where more investors will buy and then fix a few roads in the barrios.
Not fix the barrios first and leave the money producing areas to dry...
From: Dominican Republic, vieja Santo Domingo
That i do agree on completely ..so many projects that once may have been ok but now are in poor condition with no maintenance ..I think that the metal barriers along some roads are classic examples smashed into and seldom fixed up. Traffic lights that once worked but now are off . Drains that once worked in storms now are all clogged up. Anything that can be destroyed ,is destroyed.
We have so much to do to raise the levels of conduct in this country. Manners are not taught ,respect is not taught ..it is is sad
