Hey LF: Cut this:
Economist Bernardo Vega says that the DR could feel the short-term effects of its growing foreign debt. He says the problem is not so much the total of the debt, or its relation to the GDP, or the payments that need to be made against foreign exchange receipts. The problem is that every day a larger proportion of the debt is made up by "hard" loans and short payment terms, high interest rates and reduced grace periods, and because they are for the purchase of goods and services without tender and consequently padded, he explains in a contribution to Hoy today.
Vega warns that 61% of the foreign debt expires within the next 5 years.
He asks out loud: "When will the next renegotiation of the foreign debt come when we do not have in our budget sufficient resources to pay what we already owe?"

JCE on Julio Romero
In another, perhaps more serious matter, the possible nomination of Julio Romero, an admitted pederast, will be investigated by the JCE if it does take place. Castanos Guzman did say however, that if there is no conviction for a felony, a person does not lose his right to stand for election. Feminist groups are challenging the PRD to revoke Julio Romero's pre-candidacy for deputy, after he admitted to getting an underage girl pregnant, denying paternity and failing to provide child support. When the scandal was exposed, Romero argued that this was common practice in the DR and he had done nothing out of the ordinary. The protesters were led by gynecologist Lilliam Fondeur and Lourdes Contreras, director of the gender studies department at INTEC University.

Creating 500 jobs, eliminating 100,000
The president of the National Association of Furniture, Mattresses and Related Industries (Asonaimco), Juan Jose Attias, is appealing to Ikea to sooner than later feature locally made articles in their new store that opens today. He said that everything sold in Ikea is imported. He speculated that while Ikea is creating 500 jobs, it would contribute to the bankruptcy of hundreds of furniture-related businesses and a loss of around 100,000 jobs in direct and indirectly related businesses.
"What happens is that Ikea has set up shop in a market like this where furniture is very important", he stated. He adds: "Asonaimco has asked for a meeting, but always, without listening, they tell us that they are not interested in working with local producers for the time being".

Look, everyone can exercise their vote with their money.
Dominicans are naturally intelligent and astute. If they deem Ikea's products to be substandard, and if they feel especially patriotic, then they should spend their money elsewhere and support their brethren. Who the heck are we to dictate to our people what and from whom to buy. They have already suffered long enough and been dictated much.
People like quality and, with limited resources, Dominicans would not be wasting their money on inferior products if they perceive them as such. Let my people be free to choose what they want and how they wish to spend their hard-earned cash.
Competition is a great thing, and helps technology move forth. In the end, we all benefit from it.
Perhaps Dominican furniture makers should be concentrating more on improved quality and cost and efficiency rather than Ikea. If they do offer a superior product, then they really don't have much to worry about.

Why do we have to politicize this?
People are called niggers and honkies and morenos and detenio everywhere, so why do we have to make this so bad here-which I really do not believe.
Ikea is bringing choices, providing significant jobs, paying taxes-so what exactly is problem?
Should we kick them out, replace them with those government chains from Cuba? Would our people really be better with that choice?
The time for ideological crap of the 60's and 70's has come and gone. It is fact that hose who embraced the purely left-leaning doctrines aren left in the dust; those who embraced the more progressive doctrine of free market and capitalism have fared much better-no matter how you might spin it.

Dr. Strangelove,
Opposing the equivalent of the 99 cent store of furniture is not tantamount to endorsing Communism or advocating for the destruction of Capitalism. It is just disagreeing with another flavor of the month hoopla presented to us as the greatest arrival in the Dominican Republic since antibiotics.
With regard to politicizing it, it was LIE-onel Fernandez who did that by taking the photo op. Imagine how the world looks at us when the president of the republic attends the opening of a five and dime in the furniture world.

More information for those who like to live with their head above the sand!
"The book has attracted enormous media attention in Sweden, with its unprecedented attack on a national institution by one of its former senior executives. The last time the furniture giant came in for such negative publicity was more than a decade ago when Mr Kamprad senior was unmasked as having been a wartime member of a Swedish pro-Nazi organisation.
He managed to survive that stain on his reputation by publicly apologising and writing personally to all of Ikea’s Jewish staff. This time around, Ikea has dismissed the book as “the author’s personal opinion on Ikea and the Kamprad family. Ikea sees no reason to make a comment on someone’s personal view on the company.”

Dean Josean,
I can see your point of view.
Even though we are all armed to the teeth here, we really don't have much leverage in preventing stores such as OTB [worst than a porn store-I really mean it!] from setting up shop in the neighborhood.
We really could do much worse than Ikea in that neighborhood.
I expect things to be different in DR, because we are a largely colored society and the Kamprads are capitalist store owners bent on making a profit. If they humiliate and offend the buying public, then they would soon be packing up their store and moving somewhere else.
I've visited Ikea stores in Newark and Pittsburgh, and I observed quite a few minorities working there, many of whom were smart college students. They were not people who would take kindly to discrimination and racism, at least I wouldn't think.
Let's give Ikea a shot; if they disrespect us and our culture, then "lets push them into the sea with our pitchforks." That should be fair.

Josean Greater Good..A metaphysical concept designating anything that undercuts capitalism and the frivolous American way of life, and/or promotes the new, progressive mode of being. Any action taken with altruistic intentions in mind, regardless of its practical result or purpose, or of the misery that it may produce, is considered a contribution to The Greater Good. In various contexts may denote an opposite of capitalism, a euphemism for Communism, or an atheistic alternative to God. Also known as "Common Good." E.g. "We're going to take things away from you on behalf of the Common Good." (Hillary Clinton) The masses invariably find this expression quite analgesic and convincing. If we were to continue with this attitude towards substantive, non-tourism industry, foreign investment, we are doomed. why not let the Dominican consumer be ultimate arbiter, just as it should be in any democratic process.
I am disturbed because much of the commentary wants to dictate what the people should want, have, and that's anti-democratic no matter how well-intentioned or spun.
I don't wish to follow the Chavez or Castro model, and I don't believe my Dominican compatriots wish to do so, either.
Ikea, at great financial risk [i would have never done it!] has invested about $85M in DR. We should be grateful for their initiative, risk. Let the people vote with their $ as to whether or not they should be viable in our country. To do otherwise would be not only condescending but also preposterous. Let's stop maligning Ikea so much and let our people decide their success or failure. Could we?
Thank you.

I certainly do not what to dictate to people how they spend their money or for anyone to dictate to me how to spend mine. I also believe that the right to express displeasure with the actions of government and or business and their practices is also fundamental to the democratic process. And just as people should have the right to pick an chose what they buy, they should also have the right to pick and chose information about who is trying to sell them goods. They are not obligate to buy IKEA’s products nor are they obligate to buy my arguments but they should have right to decide on their own in either case.

We should never try to limit dissentt if we TRULY believe in Democracy, whether it’s to our liking or not. Just like products, ideas have a market place and what determines what opinions are “bought and sold” should be the value they have to the individual consumer. Not by a big brother censor who determines what is popular or acceptable dissent and opinion.
I must also take exception to your statement quote” Ikea, at great financial risk [i would have never done it!] has invested about $85M in DR. We should be grateful for their initiative, risk.”
IKEA are big boys and have a lot of MBAs and CPAs and if they decided to take the risk it was after the executives were present a very viable business plan and good profit potential. They are not altruistic economic missionaries that came to DR out of the goodness of their hearts. You and I know the real business world doesn’t work that way.

Do you expect their ROI to be above 10%? That would be a lot of particle board. I don't invest my own money unless I can get 1%/month. I don't suppose they will reach this level in DR. DR, with a population hovering around 10M, and maybe 2M in Santo Domingo and of limited financial means, offers very limited growth potential.

well, Glomar, once again, flattery will get you nowhere, because i simply agree with you in this case. i have no idea what the bean counters at IKEA consider to be an acceptable return on investment. if they consider somewhere around .4% as good enough to stay afloat, then maybe they will. 1% per month is a stretch. granted, the salaries are low, but are they low enough to counterbalance the costs such as electricity? and, is there a sufficient population with the means to buy enough big ticket items to make it viable? a lot of people may walk in the door, but it does not help if they buy a vase and a floral arrangement, and leave the buying of the couch and wall unit to the stores where the guys will give the fiao to the neighborhood denizens. bean counters suffer from one problem. all the MBA and CPA qualifications are worthless if you do not understand the CULTURE. that is why some mega barber shops such as SUPERCUTS fail in certain neighborhoods. because, in certain societies

In another, perhaps more serious matter, the possible nomination of Julio Romero, an admitted pederast, will be investigated by the JCE if it does take place.

What does Carlos Franco, Ateo and Ikea have in common?
MJEV.
glomarexplorer,
diversity on products is the key for a strong economy and it gives away more freedom for those Dominicans who love this store. There's lots of foreigners and Dominicans in the county who where waiting for this new store. Not only that but the standards of organization IKEA has are excelent it its a good example for our society to learn from.
I would agree with your comments immediately above.

This is not the first time a writer has accused Kamprad of racism. In 1994, a journalist revealed that Kamprad was a member of a Nazi organization in his youth. At the time, the Guardian reported that this "was about as devastating a public relations disaster as it was possible to imagine."

My God, we are talking about a store here, where people would shop of their own free will.
Communism is moribund. It doesn't work. It never has and never will. Even the Russians and Chinese have abandoned it. DR must not embrace it.

MJEV.
I am not only opposed to this because I think their stuff is GARBAGE at ANY PRICE but also the location which adds even more congestion to and already miserably overcrowded area; more eggs in the same crowded basket if you will.
