Santo Domingo.- The blackouts have intensified in the last few hours in Santo Domingo, Santiago and other cities, as electricity output dropped below 1,300 megawatts, with a deficit of more than 500 MW.
The generation fell 87 megawatts from 1,380 to 1,293 megawatts, the regulatory agency Electricity Superintendence said on its Web.
The tumble in generation, among others causes, occurred when the output of the AES-Andres (Boca Chica) plant, with the highest capacity in Dominican Republic, fell from 292 to 219 megawatts.
The hydroelectric dams also continue with a lower-than-normal generation amid the seasonal drought, with an output of barely 43.2 MW today, as 25 of the 38 were taken off line and only 13 operate normally.
The hydroelectric dams Tavera, Valdesia, Jigüey-Aguacate, Monción, Baigüaque, Pinalito, Rincon, Rio Blanco and Monción, among others went off line, the same with the power plants Haina I, Haina IV, Puerto Plata I and II, the Haina turbo-gas, Barahona, San Pedro, Falcondo I and III, the three Cogentrix turbo-gas, and Los Mina V.

i always believed that we can't depend to much on hydroelectric power, we need to diversify more the alternative energies.

Desertion high at primary level
A shocking number of children drop out of public primary school, according to the National Education Forum. For every 100 students who begin primary school only 48 finish the eighth grade and barely 25 go on to enroll in high school.

Here is our present:
PRD erases Julio Romero
Yielding to pressure from women's groups, the PRD party president has announced that deputy Julio Romero would not run for the PRD in the municipal and congressional election. "We need to have an ear to Dominican society. The PRD of these times needs to act in tune with the people, whether or not they are right," said Miguel Vargas Maldonado when approached after giving a lecture at a conference at the UASD university. He said that despite "Romero's great qualities as a PRD activist," he would not be on the PRD ticket for Santo Domingo East.
Romero had been campaigning for re-election, but a TV investigative report by Alicia Ortega revealed that he had had sex with an underage girl, got her pregnant and refused to accept paternity. It later emerged that this was the second child he had sired out of wedlock and refused to recognize. Romero has downplayed the issue, saying it was common in Dominican society.

"Desertion high at primary level" - Didn't you know that this time of the year is dry season in most of Caribbean?
Just wait a couple months: End of May through September, DR will be experiencing flash floods, washed off hills due to water saturation and dams above capacity limit. Same story repeats every year, pero somos como el quipe que no cojemos cabeza.
