Santo Domingo.- The head of the Senate’s Environmental Commission asked the Presidency to review the gold mining  contract with the company Barrick Gold, to obtain better advantages and compensate affected communities.

Felix Nova, the ruling PLD party lawmaker for Monseñor Noel province, said the contract will not benefit his community. In a communication directed to the director “Monseñor Noel province and its municipalities Bonao, Piedra Blanca and Maimón which encompass almost half of the mine, are excluded from the benefits, in fact already reduced by the general terms of the contract.”

He said the mining operation in his province will lead to the destruction and pollution of its water sources, dust and other problems, adding that the contract’s revision must include supervision mechanisms to safeguard the environmental, responsibility against liabilities left by the prior miner Rosario Dominicana and “mainly the benefits which the affected municipalities must receive.”

Nova added that despite that he didn’t vote to approve the contract, he acknowledges that the gold mining operation in Pueblo Viejo, Cotuí (northeast) provides funds necessary to solve the country’s problems.

No "his" provence is not benifiting....obviously he has not driven down main street Maimon early in the morning and seen all the town going to work at the mine, or the new business that have opened in the town. As for environment that is a joke he needs to take another look at what he had before. The water was not drinkable and the filth in the streets were there long before Barrick entered the country. His hand is out and Barrick is leaving it empty!

the predictable nitwit has opined

Populist thievery!

mining is one of the greatest generators of environmental disaster in any country. it creates toxic wastes, pollution, and renders much of the surrounding environs unuseable in the foreseeable future. also, it is non renewable. it is a sacrifice to a country to allow for certain types of mining, and, in many cases, the cost benefit analysis leans toward leaving the minerals where they are. of course, anthonyc will remind us that mining provides jobs and income. he forgets that it also provides profits for the mining company. in his usual demented analysis, he makes the argument that the people with less wealth need the venture more than the guys with the cash. Barrick Gold is not here because it is staffed with numerous iterations of Mother Theresa. it has crunched the numbers, and they point to profits for the principles and shareholders. this notion of ¨ we need them more than they need us¨is another of the fallacies

espoused by limited thinkers, who fail to see that without the DR, Barrick is looking elsewhere, at probably greater costs, with lesser prospects of profitable return. but, in his mind, or what passes for one, this country should get on its knees and genuflect to the great Massa for giving us the opportunity to help them make some money. ask them for a fair deal, and you are disrespectful. if you ask for a fair cut, you are ungrateful to your benefactors for allowing you to get a bite to eat. it is exactly this kind of thinking that caused Fidel to chase his type out of Cuba.

Xwill... Let me take it a bit further...

DR should start mining its own gold and not selling it to other countries... Maintain gold as the reserve wealth... Its better than having dollars and all countries of the world accept it!

The Looter speaks.

Mining is what allows you to spew your looters mentality here.
Coal, Copper, Iron, Aluminum, Silver, Gold even rocks make your life livable. So keep bashing mining. I defy you to live one day without any of the benefits of mining.

you are a complete fool, anthonyc. nobody is bashing mining as an enterprise. it does have a positive effect on an economy. but it has its downside . it is kind of like chemotherapy. there is a good chance that it will save one´s life in the event of cancer. however, the attendant side effects are draconian, and patients suffer horrific agony in its application. then again, i would not expect a childlike mind like yours to see beyond simple, monochromatic explanations. i repeat..GO TO SCHOOL. it is not too late.

All of the people that are speaking bad about this project is because they havent noticed on the responsible manner that Barrick is CONSTRUCTING the mine. I capitalize constructing because how on earth if the mine is not still in operation it is polluting or contaminating.
A lot of journalists and politicians just want money. We have that nickel mine in Bonao, before closing, everybody was complaining, now we want that mine back in operations.

Barrick is cleaning all the mess that was left by the previous mine.

I bet if some of you had at least a cousin working there, you wouldnt be criticizing.
There are thousands of employess.
