Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Agro Board (JAD) is demanding that the monetary authorities create a fund in the Central Bank to cover credit risk, aimed at spurring more money for production.
JAD president Felix Alberto Rojas spoke during a meeting with 55 agribusiness leaders held in the processing plant of the Compañía Agropecuaria Santo Domingo, where they presented the sector’s technical and productive advances in the raising of beef cattle.
He said the sector requires more flexible bank norms to help capitalize the countryside, which requires a fund to cover the credit risk for farms nationwide.
Rojas also hailed Internal Taxes norm 03-10, which extends the exemption to pay the advance Tax on Income for one year. He said the measure is favorable for farmers by making it easier to capitalize their productive operations.
The agro leader however stated his concern with the risk which in his view affects the export of vegetables, mangos and bananas to the European Union, from the detection of residues of pesticides above the levels the international standards allow.
He suggested that the Government define a strategy and not try to solve it with a simple resolution which regulates pesticide imports.
The JAD president also revealed that there are several hurdles to export Dominican meats to the United States, noting that whenever a new inspector arrives from that nation, they change the rules and create delays against the country.

Something for LF to negotiate over Haitian cooperation? Would be interesting if DR had Japanese or Israeli agronomist, as currently is being done in Costa Rica, to supervise on organic methods to improve export market penetration in US and EU.

Leonel is going down in history as the moron who missed the best opportunity to get DR out of poverty. With all that's going on right now and the shortages of food everywhere, DR is positioned to supply this with good quality and big quantities. But instead of pushing for preferential agricultural benefits, treaties, expertise and distribution, we get stuck with bonds that will go towards the campaing. Its sad that such a unique opportunity is wasted on corruption and demagogery

Sajomero,
Don't be so pessimistic about LF just yet; although I have my doubts too, who better to have negotiating for DR's interest? Not too many candidates. Let's see what he gets in return for the help and assistance in meeting the tragedy that refelled Haiti. Will the international community aid Haiti and the DR accordingly? Later this month and in June of this year we'll have a better picture. This moment is of immense historical importance for both sides of the island, and any major foul-ups could have lasting and devastating historical consequences for both sides. For the DR it's vitally important that LF get assurances on aid and agreements for the management and future re-location of the sizable human flow towards the eastern part of the island. This process, well under way, needs to be addressed in the negotiations. Eminent domain has to be used to force private landowners to cede with compensation lands for resettlement in Haiti. LF has to be firm on these points.

Sajomero,
Lets hope your judgements are true, since I have 1200 tareas or 186 acres waiting for me in La Vega since my aunt gave it to my father to do something with ( she married into the Goyco family. I don't know if you know them). Were currently in the process of finding out the exporting requirements. So hopefully all goes well

RPaulino1,
What do you plan to cultivate?
From: United States
Josean,
Well my father wants to start off with 300 tareas of bell peppers, he's also focusing on eggplant, maybe onions, tomatoes, and yuca. I'm not 100% sure about the other things and how much land we will use except for the bell peppers. I have a question the regional of the agriculture dept from La Vega is going to supply us with seeds, machinery etc. I wanted to know if this direction is a good one, obviously we will need to pay back a portion of what they supply us, but I wanted to know if they will profit mostly from the exports that we do since they're the ones looking into that for us. Any advice would help thanks

I have very limited knowledge in the area, but I have friends who have stated that greenhouse farming is the way to go as well as hydroponics. I would also suggest that you work on getting potential buyers lined up, as I know of many who produce and then can’t sell or sell at minimun break even levels.
However, I do feel there is an extraordinary future in farming especially exporting to Florida, Puerto Rico and the eastern seaboard in general!
Good luck and report to us on your developments from time to time. I am a campesino to the core!

Josean,
Thanks a lot for the encouragement. The producers that you know do they export by any chance?
Also my cousins suegro is an agronomo ( I don't know how you spell it) in the countries Dept of Agriculture he was the one who gave us the ok to farm on the land and got us in contact with the regional from La Vega. ( who was very happy with the condition and size of the land) Thats another thing the reginal stated that he will provide greenhouses as well. But for the potential buyers I'm not too sure about , I'm scared shit less about not finding any buyers. Thats why I'm focusing all my energy into exporting to the U.S or anywhere. With all the free-trade thats going on I only read good news for large farmers ( I don't know if I'm in that category) in D.R
