Santo Domingo.- Justice and Transparency Foundation (FJT) president Trajano Potentini on Monday appealed to the good sense of the mining company Barrick Gold’s executives, as well as to the Dominican officials to review the exploitation contract.

Potentini, despite acknowledging that the contract’s apparent economic and tax advantages, is concerned the benefits may turn to smoke and empty promises, because they are conditioned on whether the company is profitable. “With similar antecedents, to enter into a contract anticipating future profits is at least a mockery against the Dominican people.”

“Independently of the contractors’ good faith and willingness, it’s necessary to anticipate the social and political consequences which the contract has brought about in Monseñor Noel (central province) and the entire country,” he said

In a statement Potentini affirmed that the movement to reject Barrick and its operations demands a serious redraft of the environmental responsibilities and how -via an environmental impact study- to cleanup the pollutants left by the old Rosario Dominicana.

He called the Barrick Gold contract “onerous” and harmful to the national interest.

NIcky was with Tony "Two Fingas", trying to figure out why can't they determind if the dig was profitable after the digging contract was over.

The continuing exploitation of Nature's hazardous waste repositories is threatening all of humanity. Whole ecosystems have been wiped out in the quest to dig up a nation's resources. Foreign miners continue exploiting the resources of poor nations, retreat and leave a big mess. Hopefully in the near future, an enlightened humanity will find other commodities in which to boost their economies, which will be for the common good and not just for the good of a few:

Academia de Ciencias y UASD dicen intoxicaciones en minera se debieron a un químico, no alimentos

Santo Domingo.- La Academia de Ciencia y la Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD) informaron hoy que los trastornos de salud masivos que padecieron los trabajadores de la Barrick Gold no se produjeron por infección bacteriana como expresaron las autoridades de la empresa minera y de Salud Pública, sino por una intoxicación química debido a los síntomas y el tratamiento aplicado por los médicos.
