SAN PEDRO, Dominican republic. - The Government announced a call for tenders to build the Bavaro-Miches-Sabana de la Mar highway (northeast), which also includes the construction of a new tourist port.
Public Works minister Victor Diaz said the call for tenders will be published on Monday.
The official, who took part for the ribbon cutting of the bridge across the Soco river, said the highway’s construction, together with that of the Santo Domingo-Samana road, and of the Las Terrenas-Sanchez-Nagua route, would complete the modern circuit which will link the capital with the East region, and would also reach Rio San Juan and Cabarete on the Atlantic coast.
Another project announced by Diaz was the solution to the North-South jams traffic on the Maximo Gomez, Tiradentes and Abraham Lincoln avenues to "definitively leave the city of Santo Domingo without traumas in vehicle transit."
President Leonel Fernandez headed the inaugural of the four-lane bridge named Guido Gil, built at a cost of more than RD$1.36 billion, and links San Pedro and La Romana provinces.

This was a very important bridge and finally its finished. If they could only finish the rest of the road it will be a great advance for the whole region. Currently you risk your life driving to the East, just this past weekend relatives of a friend of mine went to visit the Basilica in Higuey. The mother died in the accident and the father is still in critical care, these are educated, good drivers, not your irresponsible voladora chofer. How many more lives will this death road claim before its finished?

last year more americian tourists visited jamaica and many other caribbean islands. the dr with its sunny beaches and proximity is an appealing vaction destination for americian tourists.
the dr needs to upgrade its roads if its to grown in the tourists business.
look at cuba its the main sourace of income the castro regime.cuba's tourism industry is operated and owned by the cuban military, the ministry of the REVOLUTIONARY ARMED FORCES {MINFAR}......they have transformed itself to one of the most entrepreneurial, cororate conglomerates in the americans."
ps.
cuba is one of the worlds remaining totalitarian, command-control economies, along side north korea.

but the fact is that in almost two decades of canadian and european tourism has not eased the castros regime's repression, or improved its respect for basic human rights or helped cuba's civil society gain any democratic space.
so i believe the current u.s. policy will stay inaffect for many years too come.
dr can be the "place" TO VIST FOR MANY AMERICAN TOURISTS.
ANY WAY FIX THE G-D DAMM ROADS.

Only took about 6 years to build the bridge.
Now finish the roads, build schools and hospitals, train more doctors, teach hard work and honesty, curtail the drug trade and invest in solar energy.
That might be too much to ask for a govenment that takes 6 years to build a bridge.
And if you believe they can do any of these things, have I got a bridge for you to buy.

Only here would you drive on a road suited for an ATV, cross washed out bridges...only to find this great bridge in the middle of nowhere...only to have the road return to a fossilsed relic.
So...lets finish the Tourist Boulavard to places that actually exist, before we build a road to an investors pipe dream....sound like a good idea???

That bridge marks the psychological border between the East region and the rest of the country.
The moment you get into La Romana Province, it's new constructions, projects underway, good hotel offers,, all the way to Bavaro, Cap Cana etc etc .
Nothing to do with rundown POP or anarchic Las Terrenas. I doubt the Rio Verde Bridge in Cangrejos (3 km west of POP airport) will ever be replaced by something comparable.
