Santo Domingo. - Construction on the 272 million dollar Coral Highway advances with heavy equipment work throughout the route, especially at the crossing of the current road between Higüey and La Romana (east), where construction has begun for a major exchange for traffic from and toward Bayahibe and La Romana International Airport.
A major work site is located along the eastern side of the highway in front of the Airport, whereas a few miles from there construction advances on the new 300 meter long bridge across the Chavón river, structure which will span the two step cliffs formed by the waterway.
The project includes two other bridges, one across the Duey river and the other at Santa Clara, in addition to several overpasses and another interchange at the crossing of the road to San Rafael Yuma and Boca de Yuma.

Wow, 272Mil USD for a highway and two bridges. Wait!!! Something is wrong here........Last summer 6 overpasses were billed to the sum of 162 million US DOLLARS. Two things will happen here, there might be change coming back from Leo's Overpass project or The Dominican Government has to brace its self for the true value of this project.

There is something wrong here with the math. There are approximately 35 miles from La Romana to el cortecito Higuey. The cost per miles is going to be around 7771428.57 I think, that the price is very high on cost per mile base.

Hope they charge a big toll to cover cost.
A train line or guided bus line would have been cheaper by far.

abc200,
Big toll???? The common Dominican can not even afford to keep up with the gas prices...

A big toll lorries, cars would help in many ways:
Local producers would get a break as they could compete more effectively against imports etc. 'Food miles' would be reduced.
Less gas would be consumed if personal journies were made by bus, motor-cycle. This would save importing expensive oil.
If trips in cars were more expensive fewer would own them and this would also save on imports/spare parts/tyres etc.
The highway would be maintained better with less traffic.
Finance could be raised for a nice train service like those running along the Costa del Sol in Spain. This would provide employment - drivers etc.
Parts of the highway could be leased for growing fruit etc.
Accident risk could be reduced.

The math was a bit off I get about $8,000,000. per mile. That is about $7,000,000. more than any extravagant project should cost! What make of jipeta did you say would be encluded in this project??? Mercedis ?? Humvis? Surely, several per family? We wouldn't want to forget the Sra. or a concubine or two would we???

There is no doubt about it. Corruption or no corruption LF is working to improve the DR. Yes, the PLD and LF can do more but when comparing this government with the last two PRD....there is no comparison.

xw I hope the police lurk and catch you - fine you for a dirty windscreen, driving too fast or driving in the middle of the road or something. Big vehicles are a hazard in the countryside. I expect your friends have a barge to float you across the river.
