Santo Domingo. - The company Globasol signed an agreement on Monday with TSK-Ingemas, of the Spanish group Globalia, to build Dominican Republic’s first biodiesel  plant, at a cost of 40 million dollars.

The agreement includes the construction of a plant within 14 months in the province Azua (south) to use oil from native varieties of brush such as jatrofa and higuereta, which haven’t any use so far since the oil they produce is toxic.

The agreement includes the Surfuturo Foundation, which will promote the establishment of plantations in the country’s poorest region, with the guarantee for farmers who raise the crops to be bought by the future plant.

Globasol executive Jose Vicente Galindo said the plant’s maximum production of 100,000 tons per year would require plantations totaling 60,000 hectares.

Attending the signing ceremony were Spain ambassador Diego Bermejo and Asturias region president Vicente Alvarez Areces, who concludes his first official visit to the country today.

I wish Globasol the best of luck and hope this project doesn't get sabotaged, by government corruption or the controlling wealthy families of influence.

Make this work :)

Good news. What ever happened to the CNG that was to be distributed and sold for autos and transport vehicles? Are they selling many CNG conversion kits for Automobiles? Biodiesel is great, but the price of petrol is yet a bit low for it too really take off as a serious fuel supplement or fuel.

this is probably the sixth such announcement we have seen in the last year. this jatropha biodiesel thing is not easy. it has not been very successful in most countries, and, i hope it works here, but i have my doubts.

at least, it will provide constant source of work. this fruit ripens very unevenly, and has to be harvested EVERY DAY. nobody has come up with a successful way of mechanising the harvest, as they have done for other fruits like olives. mechanical shakers are not the answer. the irrigation techniques and the soil tilling preparation have to be correct, or the trees will yield next to nothing. many ventures have been abandoned, because it is just too difficut to get it right. but, it is election time. what better time to make such an announcement.

they also told us that some company from massachusetts was coming here to build a plant using metropolitan solid waste. i also said that that was another government hoax. three years since, we have not heard a peep about them. just like six months from now, when the election is forgotten, so will this press release.

ok, kiddies...i just crunched some numbers. one hectare of jatropha, under ideal conditions, will yield six hundred and forty litres of biodiesel. that works out to just under 4 barrels. sixty thousand hectares will therefore yield two hundred and forty thousand barrels. the daily consumption of diesel fuel in the DR is a little over forty thousand barrels per day. ergo, after all is said and done, this elephant will labor to give birth to a mouse. yes, the princely amount of less than one week´s supply. and, bear in mind, this is with optimal agricultural practises and efficiency.

So when are they going to build a plant to harvest the THOUSANDS of acres of cane , lying fallow for 4 years, in Imbert to Sosua into gasohol or, better still RUM

Biodiesel? Great. Invest in a dead industry.

Cost more per gallon and voids most manufacturers warranties. Great idea.

when petroleum hits 200 dollars per barrel, it will not be dead, trust me. go read up on peak oil, then we can talk about this some more.

When it hits $200?

When is that? Next week? Next year?
Tell me when Oil will hit $200 a barrel. Then tell me how much it is in today's $$$.

Right now you are looking a price stability for oil between $75-$90 a barrel for the next few years. A consistent $200 a barrel price is a decade away.

i did not give you a time frame, anthonyc. i gave you a scenario. i said WHEN. and, it will happen, simply because of the laws of supply and demand, coupled to the fact that oil is a finite and dwindling resource, that sees demand rising faster than discovery of new sources.

If it takes 10 years for oil to hit $200 it will still be cheaper than Bio-Diesel factoring in inflation.

BTW most estimates have oil lasting 100 with known reserves. Everyday we find more oil. Our Children will all be dead and gone before we run out of oil.

3 years ago we experimented with a Bio-Diesel VW Golf TDi rally car as a part of an "Alternative" fuel program. It was sponsored by a local Bio-Diesel provider. When we did the math and looked at the long term negatives we dropped the entire program. The Sponsor was pissed but we are not hypocrites. The Bio-Diesel provider is out of business now

anthonyc, most scientist agree that we are discovering less fields of pumpable, high quality crude than before, and the demand is increasing exponentially. the market forces will only serve to keep the price going up. it will hit 200 dollars per barrel in five years or less.

Most Scientist? Which ones? Are those the scientist that benefit financially from all the doom and gloom?

Almost everyday there are new discoveries announced. The Fields off of Brazil are mind boggling. They have barely even scratched the surface in Africa. Then there is Natural Gas. A resource that the US is rich.

Bio-Diesel is fun and makes the Greenie chicks panties damp but haven't you learned anything from the Fiasco that is Ethanol?

i hardly remember being a fan of this remedy. if you look at my posting earlier, i believe i am the guy who calculated that all this bluster about the jatropha biodiesel factory in the DR will yield six days of diesel.

the price of oil never much have anything to do with demand it's a speculative driven business. The $150 psychological mark have been broken. Next time the bulls get a hold of the ball the $200 per barrel is the next major psychological mark on the chart. ( a traders perspective).
FYI - 5 years ago if you would have told any commodities trader black gold would have reach $150 level in such a short period of time abscent of a nuclear war in the middle east they would have thought you were mad.

I would like to, but frankly..I do not buy this! We have other alternatives as eolic and sun (which is never missed in my dear Azua) which can be more sustainable! This is nothing more than campaign bullshit!!
