Santo Domingo.– The Dominican Republic and Peru will begin negotiations for a free trade agreement this year, said Marcelo Puello, Industry and Commerce Foreign Trade Vice Minister.

According to Puello, President Leonel Fernandez is interested in beginning talks, which will likely start in the second half of the year. Peru’s Foreign Trade Minister Martin Pérez said the negotiations with the Dominican Republic would take place parallel to free trade talks with Panama and other Central American countries.

Bilateral trade between the two countries in 2009 totaled US$89.67 million, a 283 percent jump from 2005 when trade was US $23.4 million.

In a world with more and more competition, the trading net has to extend beyond traditional trading grounds. DR needs to develop more trade relationships and partners, everyone does. While the trade volume may appear minimal, over time the yields may benefit many Dominican families.

I bought a Bosch fridge from Peru.

Should have waited.
The more DR imports from and exports to S. America the better - save trading with the USA.
DR farmers would do well to grow Peruvian potatoes - delicious.

Peru is a clothes exporter. Theirs is better quality than the chinese garb found in most stores, and, I believe, fireproof..

yes I quite prefer clothes from Peru as the cut is more generous ..but I think that Lacoste has stopped having their clothes made in Peru and has gone to China ..but I think it is a very good trade agreement between the DR and Peru

Ricardolito, please tell us why you think it is a ¨very good trading ageement ¨. you see, mere mortals like myself have no idea of the terms of trade, the items which will be included and excluded, the terms of payments, and such other minor details. if you have some insider information, please share with us, except, of course, in the event that you have been sworn to secrecy.

I am in favour of free trade and this pact says it is free trade ..it is also between two countries that are , broadly speaking , of equal poverty so that the labour costs are more or less the same and I think the capital costs would be the same but they produce different products . I know the devil is in the detail but assuming it is a true trade agreement . the question could be just as easily put ,"Why is it not a very good trade agreement "
It is more difficult to have a good free trade agreement when one country has a great advantage but here that is not the case ..only that Peru has a greater population to sell into .

I think Latin American Market have a lot of potentials when it comes to trading. There is a lot of resources across the continent, if they get on the right track they can create a very dynamic market.

A note to the editor
please be advised if you wish for your publication to be taken seriously you might want to get a moderator who at least have reading comprehension, not someone who simply enjoy pushing the erase button. Lately my comments and those of Dread and Josean have been in your crosshair. Funny thing is these chaps are some of the most valuable contributors to your blog. It's one thing for
each picture in your articles seems to be bootleg from Google images. It's another to be practicing outright censorship when you proclaim to be the only English languagepublication in DR. Go ahead erase this.

PatDiamond, the moderator has nothing to do with expunging my posts. it is the work of a guy here who has orchestrated a clique to censor me. you know...can´t beat them, shut them up. i feel flattered that they have conceded, by their actions, that they are losers, and cannot prevail on the strength of their own merits.

How ironic, Peru is to the mestizo world as the DR is to the mulatto world, they can complain about how the light skinned mestizo/mulatto minority isn't represented and how everyone thinks they're indian/black (respectively).

actually, texasshoe, it will benefit Peru much more, as they will be the ones doing the selling, while we do the buying.
