Santo Domingo.- The head of the Barrick Gold’s local mining operation on Friday said Congress has yet to notify him to revise the contract with the Government for the exploitation of the gold mine at Pueblo Viejo, Cotui, which he affirmed is fruit of the consensus of the political leadership.
Fernando Sanchez Albavera, after meeting with the Presidency’s Chief of staff Cesar Pina Toribio in the National Palace, stressed the benefits for the country when the company Pueblo Viejo Dominicana Corporation starts to extract and export gold.
He said the contract was signed during presidencies of Hipólito Mejía’s and later during Leonel Fernandez’s and passed by a bipartisan majority in the lower chamber, and “almost unanimously in the Senate.”
“That’s been observed very well by international investors regarding the capacity for democratic consensus which exists in the Dominican Republic and also since the contract singed by Hipólito Mejía’s Administration was improved during Leonel Fernandez’s Government, which shows the world political continuity in spite of political aspects,” said the executive of the Canada based company.
Sanchez Albavera added that the contract has reduced the risk-country which attracts investments and gives the country a very good image.
