Santo Domingo.- The Plan Quisqueya Verde (green) and Taiwan’s Technical Mission in the country yesterday signed an agreement to develop the production, usage, and promotion and marketing of bamboo, via a strategic alliance to draft a nationwide plan for the Dominican Republic.
Environment minister Jaime David Fernandez Mirabal; Quisqueya Verde director Jose Enrique Báez, and Taiwan Industrial Services mission leader Richard Li signed the agreement, which stipulates that the former provides the lands to plant and produce bamboo’s various varieties, and the latter contributes the personnel required for its care and correct management.
Both parts will train the independent groups to produce the plant and support associations of bamboo furniture makers.

Should always be careful about introducing non-native species into an ecosysytem. Remember the law of unintended consequences.

it could help reduce the amount of particle board imported, also plyboard. i would love it. many times better than plywood for building high end loudspeaker enclosures.

Bamboo can also be used to extract a type of fiber that can be used for clothing. A vendor just sent me a sample of a Poloshirt made in that material and I was quite impressed with it. This could be developed into an alternative product for export and local consumption as well.

sounds good to me!

sajomero, bamboo plywood is used for very attractive, high quality furniture, and, as you stated, for great fabrics for clothing

As el platano stated, bamboo is an invasive species, they grow like wild fire.
It has to be tightly regulated; the growth and proliferation of the plant.
But yes very cheap, durable and eco-friendly, b/c they grew with little help, but that is a double edged sword, b/c the bamboo can spread and out compete native species of trees.

You can do all kinds of stuff with bamboo. I am just worried this becomes one of those deals eventually that DR is infamous for. They type where a country comes in originally under a partnership but really just ends up screwing us over and only a few people on the DR side benefit or get paid...but it's probably just my cynicism revolving all things Quisqueya...

I have some RedWood growing in my finca, in a 100 year will be taller the any building in the island,,,hopefully

ElChico, sadly, the screwing over of the Dominican people in these deals is aided and abetted by Dominicans themselves, who have no sense of patriotism, and are willing to join forces with any gringo with a few dollars, selling out the country for a chance to get a jeepeta out of the swindle. we cannot blame gringo...he is doing business. it is for us to stake out a position which is helpful to the progress of the country. sadly, in the DR, self interest trumps everything.
