SANTO DIOMINGO. - Dominican Republic’s Central bank on Wednesday said consumer prices climbed 0.36% in April, paced by a 0.96% jump in transport.

This result increases the accumulated inflation in the first fourth months to 2.69 percent, for which the Monetary Program projects will remain within the 6.0% - 7.0% range by yearend 2010.

“The underlying accumulated inflation, which measures the inflationary tendency of monetary origin and isolates the short and medium term effects resulting from shocks caused by factors exogenous to the monetary policy, was located at 0.92 percent," the Bank said on its Website.

It said the group transport contributed the most to April’s figure, on higher premium (1.43%) and regular (1.59%) gasolines. “To a lesser extent, rises in air travel costs (3,48%) and prices on motorcycles (1,54%) also contributed."

Atabey:

I have no problem with paying taxes, especially when I see the money used for the good of the country. The facts, however, seem to indicate that that is not where the money goes.

And in case you didn't see my other response, here it is again:

Sorry, can't give you the actual article, but I recently read that between salary, per diems, per diems when at work, barrelito, etc, the total income of a Senator is in excess of $40,000 US per month.

As for our world rankings, here's one: http://hdr.undp.org/en/statistics/

Here's an even better one. Page 164 http://www.weforum.org/pdf/GCR08/GCR08.pdf

As I said, last in quality of primary education of 134 countries ranked. #127 in diversion of public funds. Quality of higher education #131. Quality of math and science education #131 Education expenditure #117 Wastefulness of gov't spending #131

Want more proof. I've got it when you need it.

now why would air fares be part of a consumer price index in a country where probably less than 2% of the population fly ?? the biggest concern I have for the economy is inflation which always is a curse when a recovery commences ..but the problem I have is that it is impossible to work out a consumer price increase for those items that affect the vast percentage of the population. Maybe someone here should start there own price index ..seasonally adjusted giving the more basic items of living such as unprocessed food, rent , fares , water, clothing and so on.

Airfares figure in as I am not sure about ths moment 70% of the GDP is tourism. Now as far as population roughly 25% of Dominicanos live in the US and they fly home. I do not know about the EU or the rest of Latin America but the DR has a faily large expat comunity out there. A higher proportion of Dominicans travel overseas than Americans.

the airfares from the tourists are paid in the home countries of the tourists and similarly the airfares of the dominican yorkers returning to the DR are paid for in the USA.The percentage of americans using air travel is many many times more than in the DR where domestic travel is next to zero .

too expensive for an average family to fly into DR compared to other places... lower the airline tax and eliminate the $10 visa for US citizens!

I would double the $10 for americans ,,I am tired of paying a fortune in taxes just to land in the USA even if in transit and then be subjected to their customs and immigration procedures ,,about the worst in the world .
