SANTO DOMINGO. – President Hugo Chavez’s visit with Dominican par slated for today noon has led to heightened security in the National Palace, where access to the parking areas has been restricted and the entry of employees and visitors has been halted.

Since early morning numerous military have been deployed in the National Palace’s surroundings whereas in the frontal esplanade a red carpet was unfurled and a platform erected for Venezuela’s chief executive to receive the military honors.

FILE.- Venezuela President Hugo Chavez arrived early Wednesday in Santo Domingo’s main airport for a visit with Dominican par Leonel Fernandez and are expected to discuss agreements on the war against drugs, communications as well as in oil, especially the sale of a 49 percent stake in the country’s only refinery, Refidomsa.

Chavez’s visit will bolster relations with the Caribbean nation, which forms part of the Petrocaribe Agreement since 2005, and whose 60 years of a fruitful bilateral relation has led to several pacts on energy, oil, trade, education and even air traffic.

“This is going to be very important, because it places us in the heart of the Caribbean (Dominican Republic). We will send our petroleum so that it is refined and distributed not only in the Dominican market, but also in the market of the entire central Caribbean,” Chavez said in a statement issued from Buenos Aires.

Dominican Republic is Latin America’s eighth biggest economy and just the tourism industry contributes more than 1.0 billion dollars per year, although among its main imports are oil and its derivatives, coal, food, durable consumer goods, pharmaceuticals machinery and equipment, vehicles among others.

The visit of Venezuela’s Head of State, who arrived via the Las Americas International Airport, culminates a months-long process of talks leading to the signature for the stake in the refinery, for a reported US$131.5 million.

I do not think there will be any funds deposited ....it has been stated several times that Venezuela would pay in a trade agreement ..but then everything can change easily .

WHAT! Hugo Chavez to discuss agreements on the war against drugs? This guy is the biggest Drug Lord in South America! It is mainly because of him that the dominican republic is flooded with drugs. This guy is a big JOKE! He indirectly or directly encourages the movement of drugs through his country, all you have to do is read the DEA files. The best thing that can happen is for somebody to kill him he is an embarrassment to latin america!

Can Lee-FLEA explain why is it so important(3x) for chavez to get a piece of the dominican refinery.

When ever a buyer gives you the run arround, it's because he/she is upto no good or they are strapped for cash and can't figure out a way to secure the deal. For all we know Chavez might be planning to take over DR or sell his half to a rouge outfit that is looking to do harm to the USA and get us involved in shit that no matter how many times you wipe it can't be cleaned, causing SWAMP ASS to then getting ridiculed by your closes friends or business partners for smelling like shit and shunt you away to the back of the room. This will also cause you to be subjected to a strip down by your associates so they can determind what part of your body stinks more, your face or your ass.

Leonel Fernandez, you should consider reading "THE ART OF WAR", you are lacking the ability to make presidential decisions

Very good for the DR.
Soon businesses can convert to alternative energy LPG etc .and the refinery will be redundant.

The smoke screen and mirrors are starting to go up around the palace.
The news release is politcal propaganda and in the end the Domincans will have been screwed by Leonel and Chavez.
