Flooding at the shore of Enriquillo lake is considered to be from the same cause as Azuei.

JIMANI, Dominican Republic.- The Jimaní City Council declared the border crossing Malpaso in emergency from the Fondo or Azuei lake’s expanding shoreline.

Azuei, the second largest lake after Enriquillo, has flooded the Customs Immigration, and Agriculture Ministry offices, the barracks of the Border Security troops, businesses, the space for fairs and markets, as well as the road across the Dominican-Haiti border.

The City Council’s declaration of June 9 states that the lake’s growth has “dramatically” flooded that border zone and altered the day to day of the people and institutions. “Malpaso is the most of important point of confluence for bilateral relations such as trade, geopolitical, solidarity, human, migratory and others, where in important tax revenue and border control offices are also installed.”

Through Malpaso, just 53 kilometers from Port-au-Prince, passes most of Dominican Republic’s freight exports to Haiti, and since the January 12 quake the merchandise and international aid.

Washed out highway

Locals are concerned that if the authorities don’t take action in time, Azuei lake’s incessant expansion could be left cut off from Dominican territory, as the water drowns the zone’s only road to Haiti.

They affirm that the construction of a highway far enough away from the lake is the definitive solution.

Correction: God is now in charge of Dominican Border Policies given that the government won't uses its tools (sodiler, police, laws) to enforce illegal immigration. God has then used his tools of overflowing the lakes to shield us from the plague infested haiti!

How about we build a bridge with a toll, demand and charge US dollars currency, but at the same price as it is to cross the GW bridge over the Hudson. Dominican citizens are excempt and DR truckers get a subsidy to cut down transportation costs. Foreigners with a visa, that cross must preregister, get a prepaid pass and charged electronically. It would record the exact time, date, identity and the numbe of times anyone enters Dominican territory. It is all about money and control. I believe it would significantly cut down the corruption of border officials and will improve both legal and illegal immigration. Nevetheless we have to get them where it hurts, in the pocket. Once Dominican authorities realize how much money they can make or lose, they will be less apathetic and more interested in real border control.

Jarabacoa it saddens me that you have used a beautiful town to use for your name. Why couldnt you just use the town of Juana Mendez instead of blaspheming beautiful Jarabacoa?

If the rivers and lakes keep growing, the haitians will be called wet backs just like back home.
