SANTO DOMINGO. - A delegation from 30 Cuban companies in several sectors is in the country to bolster bonds in trade and cultural and scientific cooperation.
Cuba business leaders and an official of the Ministry of Foreign Trade signed diverse agreements with Dominican authorities, aimed at increasing trade between both nations in an expedite manner.
Foreign Trade and Investment vice minister Aurelio Mollineda heads the delegation which includes Cuba Chamber of Commerce vice president Odalis Seijo, and which will be in the country until June 13.
The Cuban-Dominican business gatherings will held in the Dominican Republic Export and Investment Center (CEI-RD) headquarters, whose director Eddy Martinez affirmed that trade and scientific cooperation are fundamental to relations between both Caribbean nations.
He said current Dominicana-Cuba annual trade tops 50 million dollars, a figure which could rise given the need for both nations to exchange products and services. “I feel that our challenge is to get the Dominican Republic and Cuba to have trade which surpasses 700 million dollars."
In his welcoming speech the CEI-RD director called on both nations to take advantage of the increasing potential of Latin American countries, for which he says it’s essential to motor stronger ties in business and scientific cooperation.
Whereas Mollineda revealed that president Leonel Fernandez will make an official visit of Cuba, during which he plans to sign several agreements with Havana par Raul Castro.

It is easy to criticize... it seems. But if you don´t understand the importance of trade and trade relations, maybe you should select a different topic. Raul or Fidel will not be there forever....nor will Lionel or any other president for that matter. Build trade and business-relations for the future and the long term - both last longer than any elected politician. Even "non-elected" politicians have a shelf life, after which they go the garbage.

Pedro,
100% correct. You don't have to love or support the internal policies of other world leaders to develop trade and commercial relations. Cuba will change, and hopefully sooner than later. But before that happier phrase is ensured, LF and other Dominican leaders would do good for the DR to expand trade and commerce with Cuba. Cuba is no longer a menace and is sadly for its people experiencing as challenging a time as ever. Even water is scarce in today's Cuba.

Tell that to the Venezuelans who have seen their oil given away in exchange for Castro's flunkies running essential services.

The support Cuba gives FARC is infinitely less than it once gave the movement, and in the case of Venezuela is now SUPPORTED by the oil profits generated by the Chavez regime. Cuba no longer has the largess of the Soviets behind it and IS far from the menacing presence of the 1960s-1990 period. Both the fall of the Soviet Union and the emasculation of the Cuban economy AND ARMED FORCES-by way of minimal funding of weapons and repairs/resupplies has left Fidel and Raulito in bad shape. Only Chavez' largess has kept Cuba from going under, in my opinion. Chavez is the source of Raulito's and Fidel's survival, not the other way around.

Hey Mucho Loco,
Could you just once make a sensible statement-just once? You alone come up with the wackiest and most impractical and meaningless solutions/offerings/ideas, etc. I really suppose you've single-handedly brought down the nuclear power industry, when you became employed in it.

You forgot to add any reasoning to your opinion. That's where you failed. Remember what Dread said: think and then reply, not the other way around. Back up your statement with a well argued position and I'll have no other choice but to except it. Otherwise, this opinion stands as much chance of being correct as your position on the Gulf oil disaster. You know that one: the one you came out of all "tarred and feathered." Cuba is toothless: An economy in shambles, a desperate state of affairs where even drinking water is scarce, a youth seeking a future outside Cuba, very low population growth due to a lack of future prospects, an infrastructure in free fall, etc.
