President Fernandez during the first line's inaugural.
Santo Domingo. - The French Government yesterday offered its Dominican par to finance, under preferential conditions, the Santo Domingo Metro’s (subway) second line, whose construction advances at a quick pace.
French ambassador Roland Dubertrand, who made the announcement during a press luncheon of the Corripio Communications Group, said he doesn’t see any obstacles and just as they did with the first Line and that his Government and French companies would also participate in the new stage of the modern mass transit system.
The diplomat, accompanied by other officials, revealed that during last year’s meeting between presidents Leonel Fernandez and Nicholas Sarkozy in Paris, the French chief executive stated his Administration’s willingness to continue to support the development of Santo Domingo’s Metro.
The second line began in the subdivision Los Alcarrizos northwest of the capital and will run below the Duarte highway, as well as the avenues Kennedy, V Centenario, San Vicente de Paul and the Mella highway.
The new route will span 22 kilometers underground h and have 24 stations.

The money going to Haiti is not an investment ,,the money is for humanitarian aid and no country expects it to be returned.

This is fine the French are offering assistance. They can be full of goodwill. However, what are the attached strings? There is nothing in this news release to indicate the preferencial conditions.
One could suggest this collaboration is like when a Dominican vendor approaches a tourist offering his wares at a "special price, just for you" ( preferencial conditions). The tourist gets the feeling the price may be suspect. But in this case, an about-face, the French are the vendors and the Dominicans are the tourists. So, tourists beware.

In a city that has a population of about 4.5 million people ,it seems illogical that there should not be a decent public transport system ..and everyone knows that the public taxi system clogs up the roads, causes numerous accidents and is appallingly uncomfortable .
Whether the metro is a better choice than a sky train system I do not know , but I am sure the second line of the SD metro has a far better route than the first and will make life better for the SD residents ..the obvious extension to Santiago is much needed and should assist in the economic life of the north,
Even though a few writers, most I am sure who do not live in SD, may oppose this progress , I am sure the enormous population in the north west , in SD este and along the way to Villa Mella will be delighted

Good news.
Doubtless French jobs will be created; Dominican too.
Hopefully some of those with jobs in France through this scheme visit DR as tourists and spend money.
Air France service to DR is good and could well expand as they take delivery of more A380's that are more efficient and comfortable for the passengers.
The more links with France the better - maybe more French in DR schools?

Did you see Bill Clinton talking about the haitian donation, he specific say, "Return on investment" this is why the are country donating so much provide it handle by clinton. have you see any contruction yet in haiti? maybe clinton is going to build the biggest resort ever on the island
From: Dominican Republic, vieja Santo Domingo
i did not see that speech but the return on investment he was talking about I feel sure was not a monetary return ,,,no one who has donated to the Clinton/Bush appeal expects to have the money returned and the same is for donations from the various countries.
As I understand it , about $5 billion of aid has been received so far and this has been used for the enormous tent cities, for medical supplies and for the essential requirements of survival...they are now moving onto the next stage which is the removal of the rubble and demolition of unsafe structures and then they get on to the rebuilding ,,,of course , as not all the aid pledges were for rents and first aid , much more of the pledged money can be expected in the next stages .
I am sure there will be leakages from the pledges but I am sure that Clinton is not the type of person to use any money corruptly .

Quisqueya will have a mass transportation system completed by the year 2020 thanks to the foresight of the present President. We trust what is being done for the countbry and hope that Quisqueyans keep choosing elected officials like most of those serving now, also hoping that people like Danilo Medina don't get a grip on the power to stop the progress and return to corruption. We know this from the inside out and just warn the people. The other thing is that if we can help it, try to subsidize our own projects with local funds to built a strong economy and prevent any foreign powers' chance to take any type of control over our destiny.
