Santo Domingo.- The American Chamber of Commerce (Amcham) yesterday warned the Government to "tread lightly" on the tax measures under study, including the indexing of fuels and the elimination of tax incentives, given the current decelerating global economy which may have aggravated effects in the country.

Amcham president Alejandro Peña Prieto said it’s the Government’s responsibility to create a good business climate in a market where uncertainty is prevented.

He noted that in the current circumstances, the authorities "must concentrate on investments that have a high return as education and health."

Peña said to increase revenue, "it’s necessary to promote the economy’s growth by means of providing the conditions in which the private sector can play its role of creating wealth and jobs."

He asked the Government to reduce superfluous costs and create the conditions so the private sector can do its part as a way to reduce the deficit and comply with the stand-by agreement signed with the International Monetary Fund in 2009.

The business leader spoke during the Amcham’s monthly luncheon, with National Police Rafael Guzman as the invited speaker.

The economy is burdened enough with a lack of efficient delivery of electricity, a bureaucratic permit process, a morass of unenforceble laws, and corrupt authorities. Yet, some survive. But, there is no growth. If the government thinks indexing the fuels and elimination of tax incentives is better; one has to ask, "better for who?"; the government or the business community.

The government has to focus on what will bring business "$" to the country. Creating an unfavorable business environment is not one of them.

The politicians and government officials should also "tread lightly" on their ridiculous lifestyle.

But no, they are entitled by breed!

current decelerating global economy ??now how they do they work that one out .nearly all of Latin America is achieving better growth rates , Australia, new Zealand and Asia are going forewards , Europe has now taken all necessary actions to cut expenditure without damaging growth and the American stock market is rising erratically but definitely ..so that really cuts the ground from under their feet .
