Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic and Haiti needn’t sign a free trade agreement to spur cross-border commerce and instead abide by what the Economic Association Agreement with the European Union (EPA) already stipulates.
Industry and Commerce Ministry Foreign Trade director Yahttaira Machado said the EPA agreement lets Cariforum Member States apply the same trade facilitates among themselves, which the group may have with the European Union.
Cariforum coordinates the financial aid by the European Union to signatory Caribbean countries of the Lome conventions, including Caricom countries and Dominican Republic.
The official, speaking with newspaper Nacional editor in chief Radhamés Gomez Pepín, also announced a contest sponsored by the European Union, for reports published in the local media from April 10 to August 10, aimed at widening the country’s knowledge on the EPA’s advantages, and with a first place prize of 250,000 pesos.
As an example Machado cited DR-CAFTA, in which for the country to be accepted several laws had to be approved and changes structural made, which werenot necessary to enter the EPA.
She said that’s the reason the EPA’s advantages need to be disclosed to diversify the country’s foreign trade, and to make use of its provisions.

Anytime you hear a Government Official who says he is against free trade they really mean they are against freedom and cutting the funds of special interest groups.

What is there to trade with Haiti anyway? Voodoo dolls? I'm not trying to be mean, but Haiti is so deforested that nothing nutritious can grow there. They used to make baseballs for MLB and even that was outsourced to Costa Rica. What Haiti needs to do is forget about agriculture and leapfrog to services and manufacturing. Japan should install Toyota factories in Port-A-Prince. That's the only way Haiti can lift itself out of the extreme poverty.

well, it seems that one more person, locogringo, has joined in the chorus, speculating about the mental age of el profe. i think i said somewhere around twelve years old. yes, that is about right. that is also his IQ. as to chompiras...well, chompy, it is not just what we can get from them which constitutes trade. it is what we sell to them. next to the USA, they constitute the largest market for Dominican products. do i need to explain the ramifications, or should i take it that you at least made it to grade 10 in public school? no? i didn´t think so. now you and El Profe can go trade some ignorant remarks over a bottle of carta dorada.

Haiti is great!!
They need to get rid of evil people like the Dominican Republic's Fernando Capellan and his Groupo M.
He pays slave wages to Haitians and Dominicans.
And companies like Levi, don't care.
Fuck capitalism and evil capitalists like Capellan, and the rest of the Dominican elite.
Aristide must return to help his people again.
Guy Phillipe, friend of the RD military, and his cronies must be terminated.

You are ignorant, as your name proclaims. You obviously know nothing about these countries, or your own, if you feel this way.
The people must be riled up.
You probably vote democrat or republican, which proves that you know nothing about YOUR country, or you wouldn't.
