Santo Domingo.– The new Decree 414-10 issued by government authorizes four million
RD$0.125 stamps for taxing alcoholic beverages. According to press reports, the stamp is aimed at
collecting RD$500,000.
The decree issued
on 12 August also authorizes 400 million stamps for RD$0.04 on matches.
The new measure is aimed at collecting RD$1.6 million, for a total of RD$2.1
million.
Some costumers strongly believe
that lawmakers are far more interested in raising money for more
government than in using tax revenue for public health and other social programs.

It seems like that the Government is crazing to look for money from everywhere......why Lie-onel can not cut his salary first and then salary reduction for his party, his cabinets, ....etc.
Lie-onel is spending so much money for so many people and those people is useless to help him to make the country better.

Can someone tell me if the tax is only on imported wine and spirits ..I do not think it is on beer and it will hurt no one´s pocket and as for a tax of .04of a peso on matches , I would think it would have to be on every match rather than a packet to be worth collecting

If the PLD cut the no show jobs there would be plenty of money to go around. Little Richard is certainly one of the no show job ladrones and is definately the party stooge here on DT.
If everything that the government said was true the IMF wouldn't be in residence here but hate to bother you with BS ABSTRACTIONS like TRUTH.

The problem is not in the level of taxation. The problem is in how the money is spend and how is collected. A lot of taxpayer's money ends in the pockets of the politicians and their friends, by stealing or by law (the salaries and tax exemptions for the politicians). In no civilized country A lot of taxpayer's money is wasted because of bad management and incompetence. Priority is spending taxpayer's money in prestige infrastructure projects than in education and improvement of the social structures. That's why while the economy grows the poverty in the country also grows.

Escott ,,the problem is that , like juanb and like JimH , you are only satisfied when you can say nothing positive, solid or constructive . The simple reason why the IMF is here is because we have to borrow money so we can have all the infrastructure improvements sooner rather than later or never ...if we can get our roads. ports and electricity in order then we can be competitive with the world and not be a backward country .
I fully understand that you may prefer to be in a backward country so that is bad luck . Yes ,there are many many ways to save money and you have named one way ,,,but regrettably I am on no ones pay list as i am too old .In what seems to be a previous life, I was responsible for huge economies in my government´spending ,,we preferred that to tax increases so I know it can be done ...and very easily here.
