Santo Domingo.- Egg producers report a monthly surplus of more than 15 million, an overproduction they affirm benefits consumers with significantly lower prices, as the colmados (small grocery stores) continue to sell them at five pesos each.
The country currently produces 165 million eggs monthly while demand is 150 million, a surplus that distributors say benefits consumers, although only 60 cents lower, because they run the risk of damage with a long storage time.
Manuel Escaño, president of the egg farmers grouped in Asohuevos said the egg glut has forced them to sell them at two pesos each, which in his view shrinks their profit margin.
