MEDELLIN. - President Leonel Fernandez affirmed that Dominican Republic’s economy has grown 6 percent in the last 50 years and predicted a growth of around 7 percent this year.
The chief executive was speaking in a meeting with Medellín Chamber of Commerce president for Antioquia Luis Diego Monsalve, and Medellín mayor Alonzo Salazar, who praised Fernandez’s leadership and skill in moving the Dominican Republic ahead during the global economic crisis, as well for his macroeconomic management.
During the gathering Fernandez also stressed the advantages and opportunities the Dominican economy offers investors and the most attractive areas for the investment.
Chamber officers organized the meeting in which 50 business leaders of the region also participated, and both Colombian officials are confident that Fernandez’s visit will lead to strong and cooperation between both towns.

While LF says he and his transparent, pathologically corrupt government will steal 30% more.
So, in essence, the poor will stay poor and ill educated while the scum bag rich will continue to be amoral savages.

It seems to me that LF is doing a very good job except in the areas of law and order and that there are some people here who can not see a tree even when it is right in front of them

Hey dopey, the constitution says he can't run again. Hate to bother your drivel with bs abstractions like truth and YES I know you don't care if that despot tramples on the constitution of this country but others may.
From: Dominican Republic, vieja Santo Domingo
escott you obviously have not read the various opinions that the changes in the constitution do not apply to LF , as he was already in power ..it has been stated that it applies for all future presidents ..that is whole point of my posting , Whether LF can stand again or not has been the subject of numerous articles in the press and it is suggested it is why posters of LF have started to appear in the capital .
From: Dominican Republic, vieja Santo Domingo
sorry to bring you down to ground level ..but if the court decides in favour of LF , then I feel sure that you will see him win easily again .

Exactly how does this "economic progress manifest itself?
There are no jobs, except PLD positions.
Our school system is considered to be amongst the worst in the world.
Our tax rates are through the roof.
Corruption is more rampant and obvious than ever.
Foreign investors are keeping away because of, amongst other things, electricity rates that are very, very high.
Crime is on the rise.
Narcotics trafficking is the major growth industry.
Instead of telling us how good the economy is, please, tell us what segments of society are improving. Tell me which things on the list are incorrect, please. What exactly is better than if was 5 years ago?
All of us, the ignorant and unwashed anxiously await your reply. You usually don't make one. Will this time be the exception?

Oh yes, one other thing.
The fact that LF is going to be President for Life is a tribute to the inability of an honest politician to break into the "Club". You can only get money from the government to campaign if you receive a certain volume of votes in the election. Consequently the only parties to receive any decent funding are the PLD, PRD, and PRSC, and if anyone believes that they are going allow someone to take away their feeding trough (our tax money), they can think again.
We are left to decide if we would prefer more of the same mismanagement, or Mejia, the worst president of any country ever, Vargas, who's questionable dealings while working for Mejia made him a rich man, or someone from the PRSC. Amable? His idea of government is to enrich himself. Witness that he has been elected to the position of senator 3 times and yet refuses to take the post . as the head of the Municipal League he is able to control (and steal?) millions. Some choice we have, huh?

How come it's always the fools that fail to recognize what for most Dominicans is evident, LF has done a great job for the country; the peso is stable, consumer confidence is up, tourism is doing well, unemployment is down, so what is that you oxymoron wants?...US or Canadian living standard? not in Latin American you won't.
From: Dominican Republic, vieja Santo Domingo
antonio1 ..sometimes I wonder if we who live in the east and in the capital are seeing all the economic growth here with our own eyes and others living abroad or in the north are having a far worse time ...everything you say in your posting is correct and I was quite amazed to read that the unemployment figure is now only 15 or 16% ...all the main supermarkets are full of people , the roads are much more busy with more cars and I have several friends looking for some semi skilled workers without success . But I believe it is less good in the north .
I would not call the people here fools but simply people who have been passed by in the general economic upturn and I think it makes them bitter.

Not a damn thing has improved since he took office. Explain why education is in the toilet? Explain why they robbed the education budget for the freakin METRO that went in one direction on one street for ann obscene amount of money to build without a damn study to prove it was even a safe investment? Explain why crime is rising like a rocket, corruption is rising on the tail of crime. Newspapers close for fear of being murdered by police and much more.

6% in last 50 years, 7% in one year, that is easy to understand. I assume he is talking about his bank account, not the economy. When will you people understand the Central Bank is not equipped to measure any economic statistics, they do not have the tools to measure economic activity. So why don't we just make them up? the entire government needs to be exiled to Elba, and then we can start all over.
From: Dominican Republic, vieja Santo Domingo
corruptman .you had better look at all the statistics for the past 10 years provided by other services apart from the Central Bank ..and maybe check through the central bank website to see actually what the central bank has and also the type of people they are looking for ,,..then write again from your united states address.

Ricarolito, I am in this country, and I am in a position to see things you cannot even imagine. You think I make this stuf up, Hollywood couldn't even write this script. It is an empty shell, with LF directing a cast of thousands, all enriching themselves while people beg and suffer in every corner of the country. It has one of the highest ratings on the world corruption index (my specialty) and has one of the lowest spending per capita on education of any country in the WORLD. I do not know nor care what you do, but obviously you have set yourself above the 80% of the people in the country who suffer daily. Good for you, just do not cast asperions on those less fortuanate than you, those victums who have no say in their tomorrows, no hope for anything resembling a real life, no realization of what has really happend to them and why, they only know they must TRY to play the system or have less than the nothing they already have.
