San Francisco de Macoris, Dominican Republic.- The organic cacao which comes from the fields near the town Castillo, northeastern Duarte province, has just been recognized as among the entire planet’s best for its particular aroma, texture and flavor.
The sector’s most experienced cacao tasters classified the local bean, as part of an international gathering held recently in the African continent.
The Agriculture Ministry said the country exported 62,385 metric tons of the “Manna of the Gods” last year with earnings of US$162.3 million, figures which may jump as new recognition boosts demand.
The situation has forged an alliance between the farm and forest research institutes IDIAF and CONIAF, and the company Roig Agro Cacao, which began to develop the project “Quality Characterization of the Castillo Zone’s Cacao” at a cost of nearly RD$2.7 million. The work, the entities affirm, will determine the bean’s distinguishing characteristics.
“The general quality of Dominican cacao is being valued in the international markets and is essential to know the different types which present specific flavors and aromas, identifying the property or localities that make it special. This information will contribute to orient buyers and producers will manage to increase their income with a better price for their product,” said project leader Marisol Ventura.
The country’s average annual production of 50,000 tons on 126,000 hectares, led by the zones Northeast, 61%; East, 13%; Central, 10%; North, 9.5%; and Central, 6.5%, and the plantations are located within 13% of the forests nationwide.

As a person born in the NE DR I can assure you is good coffee that has been grown for generations after generations has not crashed yet so you are making another "A/C" false "fact". Regardless of what you think this market will keep doing what it has done so good for more generations to come. You always come out defending free market yet every time it succeeds then all of a sudden you pull a stupid statement out of your B***.

Columbian coffee refers to a type of coffee not just coffee grown in Columbia except in Europe which gave Columbia special Designation.
What is referred to as "Colombian" coffee is really "Rubusto" Which is crown mainly by Latin American countries...The DR included. The other main type is Arabica which is what makes up most gourmet style coffees.

Sorry by Dominican coffee is nothing special. At least the way it is roasted, grounded and prepared.
From: Dominican Republic, No Spin Zone
Talk about misinformation Tony the Grouch gets his facts from ABC ....two kinds of Beans Arabica and Robusto .....after that it is Terroir and selection and roasting .....Most of the coffee in the DR is Arabica ....Brazil produces the most Robusto which is used mostly in instant coffee a huge market ....It is stupid to grow Robusto at higher elevations

Blut,
AC makes a critical error in stating that DR's bean is from the Rubusto bean, you're correct it's from the Arabica bean. There are several variations of the Arabica bean, and what the DR needs to do is follow the lead of Costa Rica; get the Japanese involved and market the brew to the millions of visitors to the island. Over time this will increase demand for the product. But concentrate on quality above all else, and within a decade or so DR could boast a quality brew.
