Santo Domingo.- President Leonel Fernandez will inaugurate Thursday the construction of the San Cristóbal-Baní highway, at a cost of more than RD$2.0 billion.

The Public Works Ministry said it works in the final details of the highway, considered the country’s third major thoroughfare, after the Duarte, and the Easterm Motorway.

In a statement Public Works specifies that the 28 kilometer long, 31.5 meter wide route features 3 meter wide shoulders and four lanes, 3.65 meters in width each. “The reconstruction works consisted of the expansion of the route, doubling the current roadway, taking it to four lanes of circulation, two in each direction.”

It added that interchanges, bridges and abutments were built throughout the entire highway.

It all depends on whether or not the Big Boys are willing to finesse its construction; if LF gets their blessings via the IMF, World Bank, etc, it's a go. Managing debt is the modern way of development; everyone does it. To be sure, it's better to have good governance and competent people operating the ship. In this regard, LF is not the worst captain we've had at the helm.

Last time I used it, about 45 days ago, it was almost finished.

I'm sure it's complete by now.

One positive thing: this road will save a lot of lives.

LF in my opinion is not incompetent. He is extremly inteligent.

He is basically corrupt and has allowed corruption like a cancer to grow without any remidal action.

After all where did all his wealth come from. He did not have a peso to his name when he took office from Balaguer.

Juanb,

Again, DR has been "blessed" with a poor choice of candidates for many years. Do you think that the Hippo man would have done any better? I think not; and probably much worse than Fernandez. And there in lies our curse, if you will: a selection process that pits bad and worse choices. DR is still very much in the process of political and social maturity. It shows in the disorganization and daily reporting; unfortunately for us it will continue for some time. Hopefully not too long. Only when several important developments are secured will we see the end of the tunnel: electrical delivery and management; reasonably educated populace; standard overall sanitation across the nation; standards in conduct in business and government that reflect reasonable maturity. All these were not present in the past; and their development has only begun with the death of Balaguer. Historically speaking the DR is still in its youthful rebellious state against mature ways of conduct.

JuanB.
It has changed for the worse. At least under Balguer you knew where you stood.
Here you have a very clean face of Leonel hiding under the cloak of democracy.

The DR is worse of than it ever was. You can philosphy all you want but the fact remains it is a pathologicaly corrupt society, and will stay that way until areal leader emerges.

The only thing Leonel has given you is a higher debt burden and even more corruption and inept people in places of power.

Leaders on horseback are not likely to bring DR or any other nation forward. Only a sustained and deepening of the process of modernization could achieve the longed for development DR wants. But this road is hard and difficult; it involves sacrifice in the present for future viability and development. To achieve this under the current political structure and the failed state status of Haiti is a daunting task. Remember, like it or not Haiti's problems become ours when their people's feet cross the border. So any leader could be overwhelmed by these problems.

This is great new, the South can not be left behind, this will do a lot to help this area. This road was badly needed, as a frequent traveler to the South, I can not be more exited. The time and gas that travelers can save is just huge!!!! So many goods are brought in from that region to the Capital and on. Tourism can also increase drastically to many beautiful spots that dot this largely unexplored region. Im optimistic about this and can't wait to hit the road again to see all the wonders of the South.

I guess you don't like counterarguments. Argue the points dear man; for a great mind like herself, you shouldn't have to press so hard, no?
