Santo Domingo.- Nonresident passenger arrivals to the country in August climbed 2.22% compared with the same month last year, or 7,247 more tourists, a total of 333,110 visitors, Dominican Republic’s Central Bank said Thursday.

It attributed the growth to the dynamism of the nonresident foreigners segment, with 5,443 additional tourists, reverting the -6,155 fall in visitors during the same month in 2009, as well as to the arrival of 1,804 more nonresident Dominicans, a growth of 3.54 percent in that group.

Why should we believe them:

The fiscal deficit has become a sort of "Tower of Babel" in which nobody knows what the real number is, since each individual, depending on how it is perceived, expounds his numbers in his own way. For the government, the net deficit in the first half of the year is RD$47 billion, as was agreed with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

But the numbers that are presented by economists differ from those of the administration and are also different from one another. The administration says that it is complying with what was agreed to with the IMF; but the economists Arturo Martinez Moya, Jaime Aristy Escuder and Henri Hebrard differ from the administration and among themselves, and each one offers different numbers. For Martinez Moya the deficit is RD$63.838 billion; according to Aristy Escuder it is RD$60 billion and according to Hebrard, it is about RD$33 billion.

The point is that they can report whatever they want. Where are these tourists?

Many don't leave the resort. That might be why you can't see them.

they want the tourists to spend their dollars at the hotel.
i can understand the thoughts behind their coments problem is i have spoken too many tourists and they tell me after hearing "dont go into town u might get hurt' they all told me they will never come back to the dr. they where scared.
most said hey! we got this info., from the horses mouth.
not good i would think they ough to come up with a better idea to keep the tourists at the hotel not tell them they might get killed in town.

2.22% increase signifies more tourists coming to the D.R. - not less.

I believe the figures. The D.R. govt. gets this information from the forms the non-residents have to complete in the airport before they depart from the D.R.

The Dominican Republic will survive and maybe even thrive.

I plan to spend a couple of days in Santiago when I go down there next month.

Never been there.

Really looking forward to my time in Santiago (and the drive from the north coast through the mountains).

I think the airport taxes are a way to make up for the fact that the majority of tourists go to the all-inclusive resorts, which tend to provide only minimal returns to the country. (Profits go back to their foreign owners, tourists encouraged to stay on site so off-site restaurants, taxis, gift shops and other tourist services get minimal benefits.)
