Santo Domingo.- For decades many Haitians work in jobs with much lower pay than most Dominicans would accept, but now the foreigners are taking over other activities and displacing the natives, despite their illegal status.
In upscale sectors such as Arroyo Hondo, Bella Vista, Naco and Piantini, Haitians are now the gardeners, night watchmen and doormen in the luxury condos and mansions along the ritzy Anacaona Avenue.
In many middle-class homes the Haitian women are also maids because while a Dominican may seek a salary of 10,000 pesos, the foreigner would agree to only 5,000.
Some of the work the immigrants already carry out alongside the Dominicans include messengers, colmados deliverymen, car washers, taxi drivers, public car drivers (concho) and moto-taxis.

@patdiamond you are always on Dominican Today defending Haitians.... since Wyclef Jean can't run for Haiti presidency why dont you run for president and solve all of Haiti's problems... You are always logging on the Dominican Today website criticising we Dominicans and calling us racist and slave masters etc. Why don't you logg on Haiticulturalx.org, haitixchange.com and the rest of the Haitains web sites and criticise the Haitian government and the people of Haiti on how they have Haiti so messed up with thier high curruption level and selfishness. We have curruption in D.R but our government works for us unlike the Haitian government. Cheap labour is every where. Look at emerging China, how big their economy is and just about every product and electronic gadget you use, when you look at the bottom of it, it says "Made in China". Hasn't cheap labor contributed to that and thier rich economy?

Economics drives this baby and until there are sufficient economic activities in Haiti the process is likely to continue. But the nationalistic impulse and the quick pace of this process is providing a "dry gun powder" effect to take hold. When will this blow, no one knows. Hopefully, the pace of Haiti's economic revitalization takes hold and fast, before the gun powder is set ablaze. Then both sides will be the worst off. Regularization and documentation of all foreign workers is needed and all workers should understand and their leaders that while DR will help out, some future repatriation will take place. Leonel Fernandez will need to make National Address to speak on this important topic, and answer questions. Nothing good can come about from a process that pits the poor against the poorer, and the national labor pool against a poorer labor pool across the border. Haiti and the DR need to combine their labor pools, this is the true ace for both in promoting exports.

These were the kind of jobs for many years that people would never give to Haitians. People would hire a Haitian to a little side job or some construction work but for a permanent domestic position it was frowned upon to hire a Haitian. So this is definitely a sign of the times. There is some blame to go around though mostly on the Dominican side. For many years Dominicans have taken these kind of jobs for granted and when they had them they have acted like they were doing the person hiring them a favor so take that into account on the other hand you have cheap people who don't pay their employees a fair wage and abuse. The Haitians are just trying to feed themselves and their family we all know what condition Haiti is in.

Let them have those jobs, who cares. We have massive unemployment, government corruption, inconsistent electic services, a terrible healthcare and educational system, and a growing underclass of poor which needs job training programs to compete in a growing global economy. A better education is what is needed for poor Dominicans, not more jobs in these areas. There was a time not long ago when we had a leader in Joaquin Balaguer who will put in his pocket and play with them all these knuclelhead NGO, human right, pest. There was no amount of money that could put a finger to pressure him to relent on his Dominicanidad.
My question to you WTF are you talking?
Sorry Hombre, I see we are on two different planets- Your problems are not the NGO's Its the business interest of your country. I did not realized I was talking above your head .
Atabey- can you please educate this young man .
That comment was truly inspiring. As a 23 year old I have always noticed the demographic changes when I would visit la Isla annually throughout my childhood. The sad case is that we are being out-breeded. Both countries holding about ten million citizens on each side on a island with a limited number of resources. Please take into consideration that does not include the illegal Haitian immigrants that are currently in the Republic.
My brothers and sisters this is not about purifying but perserving.
Some of you can look in the mirror right now and ask yourselves
do you want to live in such land? Where your daughters are no
longer safe? Where law has no order? Everything behind metal
bars? More sexual deviance introduced into our youth culture?
Stand up Dominican brother!
The time has come.
Atabey- can you please educate this young man ."
Demon I left you speechless, right? That is right create some annesia inside your close minded brain when you feel you that you had been schooled. You can't put "business interest" in other word money in the hand of a nationalist when it come to defending its Sovereign, idiot.
I'm not going to bother with re posting your rebuttals to my comments clearly there is a disconnect here. Congratulation son you have managed to prove to the whole wide web that you are truly a Dunce, however do not worry your self I'm certain you will get all the +s your heart desire for great minds do think alike.

As far as being a jealous Haitian let's See I have a US passport with an addendum, year to date 200k frequent flyer miles mainly Europe and Africa my friend at that stage where I'm from does not defined who I'm as a person for the world is very small thru my prism so I do not wear my country's flag around my shoulder.
As you have stated hear before your wife is Haitian from Jacmel as far as my contribution to Haitian Society you Can asked her about that Higher learning Institution in Port Au Prince that bear my Family name its well knowing in Haitian Society its been there for generations its only rival is the jesuit School St Louis Gonzague where some of the best and brightest of the Haitian Elite have received their formal education. On my mother side grandpa was the third largest coffee exporter out of Haiti with over 200 on his payroll and later merge with Madsen and Brandt formed PRIMEX.
As far as spending time responding to post on DT- Yes you can do that with a blackberry that's the beauty of technology. beside 10 to 14 hrs a day at the trading desk specially before non farm payroll can get boring.

hey! social security has a 88 billion dollar surplus enough money to pay- out 100% benifits until the year 2039. after that they have enough money to pay 75%..
the war uncle sam just got out of, the cost was one trillion dollars..
think i will wait and see what warren buffet has to say rather then listen to a few idiots on this site. uncle sam does not peddal bananas
they export high technology and medical equipment. some thing the dr will never be able to do. one writer on this site said uncle sam owns this life to china . ok! so the uncle borrows mucho dollars from china... but china also does and will have lots of problems why! because they are printing money 24/7 to buy the dollars from the uncle... its all going too come back to them later.
"hey! social security has a 88 billion dollar surplus enough money to pay- out 100% benifits until the year 2039. after that they have enough money to pay 75%.."
I say:
the word "money surplus" should be taken out of the American English dictionary for at least a couple of generations to come. There is no such thing as a US Money surplus when the debt equals 202 trillion dollars. I wish I could be as "optimistic" as you are but I'm a person who believes in the saying "numbers don't lie".
here is an interesting article: "We Have $202 Trillion in U.S. Debt"

With Haitians come:
crime, diseases and other social problems that stem from this invasion.
These Afro lambon Dominicans care more about these Haitians then they do for their own people!
Haitian injustice this and Haitian injustice that. Why don't you you move to Haiti and fight for them?
Are you joking me? Haitian manual labor will be Dominican Republics downfall .
Mark my words you liberal commie scum. You have no racial connection with your
Dominican brothers which will lead us to become an endangered speices.
Were dying! All because Danny feels bad for Jean Pierre and his family.
So now Jean has 6 Afro Domi Haitan babies. While the Domi neighbor only has two.
You tell that to the jefes then!!!! Until that changes which it never will then more haitians will arrive.
Post IP/Country: 69
When all the jobs are gone who is going to feed these Haitians and their offsprings? Maybe our Brasilian friend will come and answer that for us.
