Santo Domingo.- Public Works minister Victor Diaz Rúa on Wednesday said the cost for the construction of the Coral Highway increased by US$88 million because the size of the work duplicated

In a letter to newspaper Diario Libre, the official says from the original design of two lanes it was decided to expand the highway to four, from the eastern city La Romana to the resort region Punta Cana.

The road’s original budget of US$272.3 million ballooned to US$360.7 million, while the projected construction time was also raised from 24 to 32 months.

Anyway, it won't be finished before the elections, and will be another of the likes of the "Bulevar" in Bavaro/Cap Cana.

Hundreds of million spent in vain.

Um.....BULSHIT!!!!

Since when was this project ever a 2 lane? Show me where it was ever stated to be a 2 lane. All releases about the constuction of this much needed link, including all illustrations have it being a 4 lane project.

Like I said...sounds like .....BULLSHIT.

The only expansion will be in the bank accounts of those involved.

I really don't care where the money goes just finish the road. This road is going to change the entire area and create new jobs and tourists will begin to move around and spend less time in the all inclusives afraid to leave. The 4 lane highway from Cancun to the Mayan Rivieria is a perfect example of how development expands with new infastruture. I only hope this gets done by 2013 for the sake of all involved.

DR is ASSBACKWARDS.......When was the dicision made to make the project bigger than the BID CONTRACT was signed off on......Can we see the AMENDED DRAWINGS and CONTRACT....I'm scared to even ask, but throw in the new CHANGE ORDER . I wanna check the estimators final numbers, he Funkedup last time. It's going to cost DR 88mil USD. Bytheway, get the project manager in my office and that slut assistant of his..I want to know , why wasn't this thought about ahead of time......WAITE!!!! ...If the size of the project duplicated, why is it only costing 88 million USD more and only extended by 8 months..When the job was for 272mil and 2yrs for completion and now the additional work will only cost 25% +/- .......Something is up!!!! and its not Agosto's GOLDMEMBER....

PC Mike ...you have to go back quite a few years to get to this story .You may recall that the contract for the highway was held by the group who have the tollway near the airport and they were to use the profits there to build the Coral Highway .
During the heavy rain storms about 3 years ago the minister said he had the right to cancel the contract as there was a national emergency and he gave the contract , without tenders to the current group , who I think are the Colombians who built the highway to Nagua from the airport ..an appalling job with the cambers.
You are correct about the large number of new Toyota pick up vans seen in la Romana but just as worrying was the enormous excavation work over the Rio Chavon which seemed to me as a non engineer to be ultra extravagant .
The question of priorities is just as important ,,,why not first build the by pass roads around la Romana, Higuey and Otra Banda which would have been of great assistance.

The question of the 2 lanes versus 4 lanes and I have been looking at various articles written some years ago and never has 2 lanes been mentioned but often 4 lanes ..and in fact it was always a continuation of the San Pedro to la Romana road which is 4 lanes ..so all that explanation for an increase in prices is a total lie .
I imagine that the reason for the increase has much more to do with the change of contractor and a very rushed and bad contract to the new people . You may also recall that at one stage it was to be a toll road so that the contractor who put up the funds to build the road would get his money back plus a profit from the tolls . I imagine that when the sums were properly done , every contractor was aware that there was no profit from the tolls and the original contractor was happy when the minister took the contract from them .
