Santo Domingo.- Agriculture and tourism are the two  elements that can spur Dominican Republic’s development, productivity and competitiveness, affirmed the Inter-American Development Bank’s (IDB) representative in the country yesterday.

Manuel Labrado said the entity’s directors will address the strategy for the country on Monday, and that tourism and agriculture are the two productive sectors which are worth supporting.

He said those two sectors have a competitive advantage compared with other products, and in tourism’s case it’s obvious that because of its nature and the beaches, which it’s already the leader, but needs to provide added value beyond just the beach, such as culture.

Labrado said support with infrastructure, energy, transport and water is also needed, which in his view improves tourism’s quality.

As to agriculture, the official said the IDB supports it with the Competitive Agribusiness Transition Support Program (PATCA) for clusters such as Cacao, Mango and others.

He said Dominican Republic’s dimension geographic situation and proximity to US and Canada markets gives it a competitive advantage.

Labrado said the IDB also supports the country in renewable energy, through wind energy, rural and urban water programs and in transport, via the Boulevard of the Atlantic, a road grid that links several resort areas.

Speaking in a press conference with the heads of the National Business Council (Conep), the IDB official said next week a new strategy will be approved for Dominican Republic, that prioritizes support for reforms for an efficient electrical sector, as well as efficient  public spending, continued improving of the social protection system, and tourism and farming infrastructure.

He revealed that the IDB has allocated US$953.8 million in the Dominican Republic, of which 42% are pending disbursal.

Agriculture..

How refreshingly creative!

I have an idea:let's plant sugarcane and import cheap labour from Haiti to work the fields.

"He revealed that the IDB has allocated US$953.8 million in the Dominican Republic, of which 42% are pending disbursal."......Is that right!!!!

That will put us over a TRILLION USD in debt. Too much for a country of this quality and a president that speaks in forked tounge to repay.
$553mil USD spent and not a dime towards education and contructions are not payed for. Make the transcript public so that I can see what transpired, where did it go and what agency was capable enough to desolve half a billion dollars.

Leo cuts deals with FBN corps( fly by nite companies), like the one at the sugarcane plantation that is or was to export 95k tons of stolen metals.....lock him up and throw the keys away.

They could consider opening a good agricultural college or two in the remote regions for the 14+ age group and adults.
Also for toursist industry courses in French, Russian, English and German ; also performing arts.

I don't see anything communist in agricultural colleges - they even have them in the UK!

They have colleges just for brewing beer in Germany.

well, I am in the tourism business for over 25 years and bought a farm last year. I wish to develop agriculture for export as well as offering tourists attraction. We are aware of some program outthere to help farmers and build greenhouse. Money has been release by foreign governments but we can't have access to these program yet. Reason given? To launch the programs and realease the funds, they need the missing presidential signature!!! Election are coming, so you got the picture?

Rum production is important too.
Shipbuilding needs support. DR could have a big navy with submarines to protect the people.
