Biggest lie of the day:

Speaking at Hostos Community College in New York yesterday, President Leonel Fernandez declared that the Dominican Republic is going through a genuine education revolution that will conclude with the creation of citizens for what he defined as the "Era of Knowledge," as reported in Hoy. He said that individuals with high educational levels are required in order to strengthen democracy.

Best truth of the day:

"Why would he have gone there to say that the struggle to meet the Millennium Development Goals was hindered because his government chose to invest US$900 million in the first line of the metro, and once completed began the second one without knowing where the funds would come from to complete it? Why use that forum to explain, with figures from the Department for the Prosecution of Administrative Corruption that the obstacle for those objectives is the rampant corruption that bleeds the public finances and impoverishes the vast majority of our population more and more each day? Why should he incriminate himself by recognizing that he has never cared to meet the law that allocates 4% of the GDP in education?" he asks.

About using the money the city hall is taking to collect the garbage. The beach does ot need to be clean once every five years but, every week.

It is not about cleaning the beaches, it is about not polluting them. We should all celebrate that at least we have a minister who cares about it. Instead of being judging, why don't we try at least educating our kids.

Agreed... stick to the subject... Trash on beaches. One of the best things David or Leonel could do is ti ban the sale and use of styrofoam containers in the DR completely. All beaches are littered with them, more so than any other kind of trash as they never disintegrate

Agreed, styrofoam is the new beach colour...whiter than sand! I am embaraased to show the many tourists that I take weekly, the condition and lack of concern for the waterfront here, with the exception of Macao Beach, where there are actually people hire to keep it clean.

But if Dominicans of ALL social levels vwould understand that throwing garbage wherever, does not make it go away.

A severe lack of concern from almost all Dominicans when it comes to garbage. See it tossed from $120,000 cars (including a governmental convoy of black SUVs) and $2.20 moto conchos.

Living in this country takes me back 40 years in attitude.
