HIGÜEY, Dominican Republic.- Hundreds of people visit the area near the village Sanate, in eastern Altagracia Province, spurred by the Mining Agency’s exploration of the petroleum emanation in the zone, some of whose residents affirm is a gift of the Virgin Mary, whose alleged apparition more than 100 years ago gave the region its name.

Thousands of people including farmers, cattle ranchers, landowners and merchants visit the zone were technicians have gone to verify the finding, although the emanations have been known for six months in Higüey.

Some locals affirm that an important vein of low sulfur petroleum lies beneath the zone, of higher quality than Venezuela’s, emanating from the Sanate river’s eastern bank, near the are known as La Lima, just 6.5 kilometers from Higüey.

Mining Agency director Octavio Lopez on Friday announced that the company GH Geochemical Services, LTD, in Babington, England, conducted laboratory studies to determine the crude’s quality.

Actually, gmiller, it is just a manifestation of the fatalist syndrome that is not unique to the DR, but is seen in all of Latin America. everything is a gift from some higher power. so, the government buys a school district a schoolbus out of taxpayer money, and writes on the side DONATED BY HIPOLITO MEJIA. people are always reminded that they have no control over their lives. that is why they are subservient to the wishes of politicians and all authority figures, and always resolve uncertain events with the phrase si dios quiere.

Oddly enough she is responsible for anything good, but I guess anything standing outside the entrance to the basilica.....missing limbs, poorer than dirt....is not her doing nor responsability.

Geez....I really do not get religion

Tittle says : Locals say Dominican Republic petroleum find is Virgin Mary’s gift

So is she the one handing out the gifts to the politician or did she show them how to fish and they are experts that can do it on their own now. These people will never stop their quest to kill free thinking.

Like they say religious has 3 type of people who look at it differently, here they are

- Dumb people believe is TRUE
- Smart people believe is FALSE
- Politicians believe is USEFUL.

I thought gold was the gift....I quess the church will come up with a new name like.....Virgin of OIL-lupe and to think those who will profit would then make a new staute and light candles and give phrase all the way to the bank...

Well who knows one way or the other??? But I'd be cautious about thumbing my nose at the potential supernatural. Those who do should read the following:

NOT TO SOUND OFFENSIVE BUT....

Remember the Chatholic's have a saint for everything i wonder what will they come up with next...

Idol worship is nothing new why even Mother Teresa is next in line....remember Religion is man made, faith is GOD inspired.

I'm still waiting for the Church of Rome to condem the black Mexican version of there virgin saint
[dressed in all black] which is said to protect the murderous drug cartels in Mexico from harm.

Just think when Jesus was dying on the cross Mary came to him crying saying "My son" Jesus looked down and said "Woman why do you weep" I think the statement says it all with the seperation between flesh-death and spirit-life.

Idol worship is based on the old Roman belief that women were Idolized as gods, Mary just replaced all Roman women gods.

Does the term Roman Catholic ring a bell, Jesus condemed by the Phraisees but died a Roman death threw crucifixion.

Now don't nobody take that personally.

I here doubts all over your believes/non-believes

I guess if Bin Laden would read his bible to you then you would listen...(you might have to work for him for one day/life)

you criticize DR for believing in the virgin Mary, then you criticize Haiti for Voodoo...

It's just envy for you believe nothing...

How much oil is there and can we dig it without foreign assistance is the question...
Written by: JCjua, 28 Sep 2010 3:13 PM

Why would you want to dig it w/out assistance? you want transparency, sell the rights to some big company, then get a percentage of the oil extracted.

If the quality is as good as they say it is, there most be a market for it.
Sell it to the heighest bidder, then require them to use Dominican labor. to create jobs.

If you give it to the politician they are just going to sit on it and especulate.

To dreadlocks and riosm...
The reality that surrounds you is an illusion. What is unseen and eternal is far more significant than anything known. Please, don't be too quick to be sure about anything, but rather, open your hearts to the possibility that God exists and that God is good.

Chauffeur,
I believe in the living God I just don't believe in stone, wood, plastic, steel, rubber or glass IDOL WORSHIP.
Man has the right and the freedom to choose by choice not by force. I choose not to believe in man made religion but through faith Inspired.

I don't think there is anyone that believes in "religion" per se, you follow a religion which follow your own believes.
If you get married, even if it is just to abide by the law you are following a religion. you don't want to follow a religion if you go and live a lawless live. otherwise why would you do good? or bad? Isn't that the meaning of "preaching to the dessert"?

By the way, wood, plastic, I believe you are refering to the Cross? why don't just say that.

the cross is just a symbolism. even Christ in the cross is just a symbolism. and that is why you believe in "the cross".

If you are condemn and executed by hanging and 3 days later you come back from the death you might want to think you defeated "death". That in itself is a symbolism, not something that you worship.

jCJua, i did not say that i do not believe in religion. i said i have a problem with it. most of the major wars of the past had some religious nexus. Jewish families in Tel Aviv cannot sit peacefully in a restaurant, living in fear of being blown to bits by religious adversaries. the Roman Catholic Church is among the richest entities on earth, yet the Bible takes a dim view of riches. nope...i think i will pass on religion

Mans laws are based on GODS Laws remember the 10 comandments.
The problems is the way man enterprets GODS word with a twist to his own beliefs.
The cross is just a symbol part of Idol worship, unless you believe in....you know like in the movies...vampires.
As far as your asumption that I believe in the cross, I don't to me it's just a symbol of death....my GOD defeated that with the resureaction which defeated death. No cross around my neck or hanging in my house or car.

One should not mix symbolism with truth, or believe in mans version of GODS law.

"Money and Religion are power, power corrupts, total power self destrucks" that lesson man has not learned yet. The problem the way I see it is it's easyer for man to believe his own twisted version of the truth then to believe in GODS truth.

Have any of you ever heard of Hammurabbi's Code?? That body of law was promulgated long before the Ten Commandments were supposedly given to Moses.
Ancient laws were in put effect in theeffort to control the actions of man to man in the existing social structure, whether it was in a nomadic tribe, or in an urban situation. Man recognized law as being a rein on what we today call anarchy.
As to religion, man has always sought reasons for events and has attributed these events, both good andbd, to (a) higher being(s).
The tribal shamen began organized religion as a way to control the population into subservience and obedience to the shamans powr.
You figure it out. Its all about power and population control couched in mystery and mumbo-jumbo.
