SANTO DOMINGO.- The Chamber of Deputies yesterday approved 88 votes for and 9 against the amendment to the loan contract to build the Palomino Hydroelectric Dam, raising it US$80 million, from US$50 million to US$130 million.

The piece also passes the project’s control to the entity in charge of the hydroelectric dams, EGEHID.

The work will cost nearly US$400 million and its construction is 80% complete, with funds negotiated with the Central American Integration Economic Bank  (BCIE).

The Palomino hydroelectric dam, located in southwestern San Juan province, in the zone where the confluence of the South Yaque and Blanco rivers, will be built by Odebrecht and will supply 80 megawatts to the national grid.

The Contract will now go to President Leonel Fernandez, who is expected to sign it into law.

I think US400 million dollars is too much to pay for dam that is going to generate 80 MW.The diference in price excalation is going into the politician pockets. Why don't they use natural gas instead as propposed prior.
