SANTO DOMINGO. – State-owned Power Companies (CDEEE) CEO Celso Marranzini on Tuesday revealed that the distributing companies’ “poor results" one year into his tenure keep him await at night.

“I had hoped that for this date we would’ve reduced the losses in around two or three percentage points and that hasn’t been so," the official said, who affirmed however that other aspects have had significant advances.

Marranzini said that despite achieving annual savings of around RD$7.4 billion by renegotiation costs with the generators and cutting the agency’s expenses, the indicators from the distributors (EDES) disturb him. “There we haven’t managed to reduce expenses as we have done in the CDEEE."

Quoting from a just concluded technical report, the official said the proportion of billing by the EDES fell from 91.9% in July 2009, to 86.4% in the same month this year.

He said that measured in dollars, the 15.9% increase which appears in the billing simply reflects the impact of a 12% increase fee in 2009. “This doesn’t imply an improvement in the management."

Marranzini added that despite the 11.2% increase in the electricity supply in that period, the distributors posted a 35% loss in the additional energy provided.

Get rid of the friggin' EDES. Get rid of the subcontractors. Run it all from under one roof, one administration, one payroll.

Blu, you're right, the man knows how to run a business, only he's not allowed to.

Celso Marranzini should be president. Then he could seriously kick some pathologically corrupt asses.

If Dominicans had a modicum of integrity they would stand up for this guy and force a change.

Nationalise the lot and give EDF ( Electricitie de France ) the contract to run the generators, distribution and retail for five years.

Give free low energy light bulbs and fans to the poorest and 30 units a month through pre-pay meters.

Install master meters in neighborhoods. Maybe 100- 200 houses, 1 transformer and check every week usage either by radio or manually where there are high losses.

Its been done in South Africa.

I think Celso is on his way to stop apagones by 2012 right after this report comes the news that Leonel fired every head on all EDES.
