Good!
Higher petrol = fewer cars = more progress!
Why don't they take it to 400 pesos a gall.
More people using buses; coaches; and getting the Chinese to build a nice railway would reduce the import bill.
Tourism can be protected by giving out petrol discount vouchers at the airport.

SAN JUAN -- Federal agents arrested dozens of doctors accused of obtaining medical licenses through fraud or bribery, carrying out sweeping raids across Puerto Rico yesterday.
A federal grand jury indicted 88 doctors following an investigation into members of the US territory's medical-licensing board, who allegedly altered low test scores to certify unqualified candidates.
The doctors, mostly Puerto Ricans who studied medicine in the Dominican Republic, Mexico, or Cuba, paid board members bribes of as much as $10,000, according to the indictment. At least 75 were practicing medicine in Puerto Rico, some in emergency rooms, authorities said.
The arrests began near dawn. Some suspects -- including Pablo Valentin, a former executive director of the licensing board -- were seen on television being led away by local police and US Food and Drug Administration agents.
The Drug Enforcement Administration also is checking pharmacy records to determine whether the suspects prescribe

The US and China are causing the world's shortage of oil. That is why ALL countries are having to pay more for their fuel.
If the US charged similar prices for fuel the same as many other countries, then maybe more Americans would stop using all those gas guzzling vehicles.
Fuel costs are horrendous in other countries, by comparison the D.R. is still inexpensive.

No; Dread. When the price of electricity goes up people use it more economcally.
Germany is reducing energy consumption.
http://www.energy-daily.com/repor....der_In_Energy_Efficiency_999.htmlTransportation of raw materials can be by train. The rise in cost of electricity for the metro would be more than offset by more people using it if extra tax were placed on fuel or a congestion tax, car rationing introduced.
Insulation schemes can replace air conditioning and more open air markets introduced as in France.
Of course with more fresh food produced locally with organic fertilizer transport, refrigeration and fertilizer production energy consumption is reduced.
For more expensive shopping items catalogue shops can be introduced as they have been in the UK.

Stop importing cars - start importing rails and train. China could give a loan. DR did have rail from Samana to Puerto Plata.
Still has some sugar cane tracks that could be pressed into service.
In France passenger trains are mainly by day - at night the freight trains rumble through.
