Santo Domingo. – Dominican Republic's State-owned Power Companies (CDEEE) will call for tenders in November to contract 600 megawatts spread over as many as three coal-fired units in various parts of the country, and could be given sovereign guarantee if required.

Utility CEO Celso Marranzini said energy from coal is now 27% of the total output and the goal is 40%, “because that’s the fuel which currently has the most stable price. We know the problems natural gas faces in the market, not to mention fuel oil and diesel, which must become a part of history.”

The official said the decision to call for tenders comes after the CDEEE tried, but failed to sign contracts for 600 megawatts before he took the post, with two foreign companies, which he affirms requested a sovereign guarantee of US$800.0 million.

Speaking during the Annual the Electrical Industry Forum hosted by the private power companies grouped in AIDE, Marranzini added the coal-fired plants take around four years to build and discarded notions they release more pollutants to the environment. “Those plants will force many diesel plants to shut down.”

Yea right. A guarantee from the Dominican Government isn't worth the paper it is printed on.

We pay for power and the money is stolen and now they cant pay the producers of the power. Same story as always.

Just like our lottery. Ask any of the lottery winners who cannot collect the money owed because our government officials stole it already.

Sooner or later, we'll have to produce much more power than is available today.
Not just for supplying our homes, but to power our industries.
Without diversifying our income streams, we will not raise our standard of living beyond what we have today. The tourism industry won't, by itself, be enough to make a huge difference.
The key to success and prosperity, is producing goods for export. But we can't and won't without enough electricity and know-how.
Juanb, agree with you on Marranzini being a very effective public official.

Jorge;

Your site is again being spammed by foreign advertizing of Pizza Parlors.
Don't know if they are Dominican owned or not, but would take an invoice around to them and demand payent for fraudulent, pirated advertizing on your website. There is abound to be a law to cover this infraction of ethical advertizing.

Absolutly stupid - electric energy consumption has doubled per capita in the DR in 11 years.

Houses need foil / reflective paint insulation - efficient fans need to be produced - supermarkets need to shut off unnecessary freezers - a/c needs to be licenced. Building permits need an energy review.
Low energy light and appliances needs to be enforced - at present DR is a dumping ground for inefficicient obsolete appliances other countries reject.

Belching coal plants and gas electricty plants do zero or negative for DR's main industries. Its the way to reduce exports when overseas clients for exports see these plants e.g. at Boca Chica and wastful highways cluttered with SUV's

They will go to China for sure where the government is investing in extensive public tarnsport systems and has the objective of decreasing non-renwable energy consumption.
