Santo Domingo.- Most staple products have jumped in prices in the last two months, as some retailers announce hikes in basic vegetables such as onions this week due to their shortages. It sells as high as RD$140 per pound, or 17% more.
Colmados meanwhile sell eggs for RD$5 each, from RD$4; a 30 pound can of oil jumped from RD$900 to 1,050, a 17% increase; brown sugar increased from RD$18 to between RD$20 and RD$23 the pound, but some colmado owners say it’s still too scarce.
In mid September brown sugar rose from RD$15 to RD$18, but the new increase comes in less than two months it had a equal proportion, total of 33% higher in the last three months.
Liquid milk rose 22% from RD$45 to RD$55, in colmados, where despite this year’s record rice crop and glut, its price has also increased.
